6x9 Speakers in the rear tailgate?

I never thought about mounting mine vertically, but that was mainly because when I got my Jeep their were already holes cut in the panel for 6 1/2's. I just made the circular holes oval and screwed the speakers into that panel. They actually aren't mounted to the fiberglass at all. I then had to do a lot of cutting (About 4" on both sides) into the fiberglass to make them fit. Hatch didn't really show any decrease in lift. It has always been weak in the cold and only lifted about 3/4 of the way until you gave it a boost, and that's how it is now. In the warmth they work fine. They are the deepest 6x9's i've ever seen and they definitely show it in the bass. Best part is, these speakers were in the attic of my home when we moved in. Nothing better than free stuff =P.

Has anyone gone the route of building a custom sound-bar to accept some 6x9's? The lift gate mod just seems like a lot of work to only have your music drown out when there's stuff in the back (there always is in my XJ). Most of us (99-01 owners excluded I think) will need to do something to our sound-bars anyway when the sun inevitably beats the headliner material into submission.

I just bought a rear sound bar for my jeep... I'm gonna wire in some larger speakers in line with the liftgate ones so I have fuller sound, I'll let you know how it goes... but first I have too many other things to get done...

Just thought about this more... I don't know how much I like the thought of doubling (or more) the power drain on the stock rear lines... I'm gonna find myself a good amp and see if I can balance out the power levels front/rear without using a proper EQ, as I'd prefer just using the proprietary stuff in the head unit to save space... I'll run all new lines in the process... mmm I love wiring! haha
