44/9 strength vs. tire size

I'm not planning on any axle swap right now. I just had a couple questions about the strength possibilities of this axle setup I was researching

77 f100 hp44 (jana 54)
dana 50 cryo'd 5.38's
jana load bolt kit and cover girdle
grizzly locker?
RCV's
warn lockouts RCV 300m upgrade
rotated knuckles
full truss and c gussets

my question was the carrier? I know they make a 35 spline option but they're only made by ARB and ox? I was thinking grizzly 30 spline and RCV's would be plenty

ford 9"
strange nodular case
full spool
35 spline moser shafts
cryo'd 5.38's
ruffstuff truss and pinion guard

honestly looking for this setup to handle 39.5 iroks or 38x14.5 mtr kevlars
is it possible? any suggestions or insight? besides tons

Why not build a D60 and not have to question the strength?

Do a Jana 67 and run drive slugs instead of locking hubs. You will be good up to 44s pending what carrier you run.

Having built a fully polished 44, I would never recommend it to anyone. Keep the 30, or step to a 60. Fook 44s.

Drop $3k on a 44 to get the strength of a stock 60 maybe? If your going to drop that kind of coin, shaved 14bolt center section and dana 50 outers(as seen on xtreme 4x4) way stronger with equal ground clearance.

It seems absolutley silly that you would spend almost the same coin on a 44/9 combo total build wise, but be way less strong than a 14/60 o4 14/14 combo and not eve consider it. just wheel the 30/8.8 on 35-37" tires for now if you are considering the 44/9. Then down the road build a 14/60/14 setup.

thank you Jon I do hope I come to my senses like you guys are suggesting. I get it that it's almost stupid to build anything except tons. I've considered tons plenty of times. they're not for me. I'm pretty dead set on 1/2 ton. I'm not just doing it for the strength. also not sure why you guys are so concerned with how I spend my money :dunno:

If I absolutely hate it I can always part out the setup

alright let me back track and rephrase this whole thread

if I'm going to build a dana 44. would it be worth it to install cryo'd d50 gears (claimed 44% increase before cryo treatment) and the jana girdle
or will cryo treatment alone suffice (claimed 3%-50% increase)

37x12.5 tires

*sigh*

I know about tons. I'm not getting tons. right now I just want to know about 44/9

thank you
ok, well the 44 is a waste of money. no better than a polished d30 in my experience.
i would say a built dana 44 is good for up to 35's with fairly tame driving. No more than a built dana 30.

no comment on the 9, i've never ran one. they seem to be expensive to build properly though.

your money would be better invested into rcv's because dana 44 shafts still have dana 30 sized u joints, which you'll be blowing regularly with 37's.

why does everyone care about how I spend my money? :dunno:

RCV's are going in it no matter what. I'm aware that the ujoints are the same size as a 30
my only question now is about the jana 54. all I wanna know is j54 vs cryo'd 44 gears
also any info about load bolts or decreasing deflection is appreciated

have you called Carl Jantz and talked to him about it?

IMHO you are wasting your time. if you are THAT worried about the axle holding up, you already know the answer.

no because I'm not actually ready to do any swapping or order gears. just doing a little recon. also all the information is listed on his pirate pages. will he be able to tell me if a cryo'd j54 is stronger than cryo'd 44 gears? yes of course. will he be able to tell me if I should settle for 44 gears and be "ok" running them in my specific application? probably not

plenty of people run d44's passed their limits. and the one I'm considering will be much more built than some of the 44's out there. I KNOW it will hold up. still the question is j54 worth it

it will not be worth it because you can build a dana 60 for half the price.

:yelclap:

I get it guys. 44 is dumb compared to a 60 for strength and price. I've known that for a long time
let me learn the hard way and for now please entertain my stupidity by answering questions about a j54
