2wd XJ Questions

For snow I would definately go with a 2wd. I have a 94' 2wd and the only thing I would recommend if you are sold on the 2wd is to put a locker in the rear.

Dude...have you ever driven in snow with a locker? It sucks. A spool is much nicer to deal with. Either way...if she's inexperienced keep the rear end open, and throw 1-200 lbs in the back. Sand bags are cheap, and make a HUGE difference. I rarely use 4x4 in the winter...less fun and I don't really need it.

I would say wait for a 4wd. Ive drove a 2wd ford ranger with sand in the back in Alaska. It was a hassle to be stuck at a green light not getting any traction. Also one day I was coming down a Pkwy. The speed limit is 45mph, i was going 30mph, I hit the gas barely and it spun me into a spin almost taking out a light pole. I would say wait and find a 4wd.

A locker or LSD in the rear will make the truck MORE prone to spinning out in a turn. I've had an S15 with LSD and an IH ScoutII with LSD and both had that same problem. With an open diff, you have one wheel spinning and the other anchoring you. With a locker or LSD, both are spinning as is the truck.

Now having said that, I still think an LSD is good for the snow, you just have to get used to what it will do while turning. Never had any trouble on highway curves, just in-town cornering.
