Has any one replaced a 242 transfercase with a 207? I have 2 207's 21&23 spline, front and rear drive shafts, etc. I want the part time feature for my 88 xj. I'm cheap and not very abusive to this so the 207 should hold up.

They both have a part time mode, meaning they can operate on loose or low traction surfaces, but not full time on high traction surface. The 242 also incorporates a differential in the case that allows full time operation on high traction surfaces with no binding. As far as swapping to the 207, it's not a very desirable case with parts being harder to come by, but if your not getting too crazy and it's free, it shouldn't be a problem. Both the spline count and the stickout of the input on the case need to match.

207 is also only 1/2 as strong as a 242. Now, if you had a NP208J, that would be a different story! (Mine stood up to an AMC 401 for quite some time and is now being converted to RH drop with Chev NP208 parts to go into my 1 ton '73 Jeep towtruck)
