1999 Orvis RHD

That switch is for the rear facing red fog lights that you see on many of the higher end vehicles over here. They are on most vehicles over there.

You're dead right - it's easier to see what's going on with your woodgrain bezel vs. the plain grey one I referred to, and it certainly does appear as though they just cut a hole and stuck it in. At least I know I only need the switch now, which should cut down on shipping eventually.

That woodgrain transmission shifter bezel needs to go on the list as well - and I'd also go for the ashtray but that's where my seat heater switches are, and they're only slightly more important ;)

I'm also liking the full-size spare tyre cover with the storage pockets; shame my spare is too large to fit in that space!

I'm surprised mine didn't come with seat heaters, I have them on my BMW and they're great - such an oversight:bawl:

Yeah, I haven't upgraded my spare since I put 31"s on 'cos it wouldn't be so neat back there. Figure I could limp home with a stock spare on the front if I needed to.

What is the switch the the right of the fog lamp switch used for?

Yeah, it's for the rear fogs. That's why the rear light clusters are different on European XJs. The red light at the bottom is very high intensity (brighter than the brake lights). It avoids being rear-ended in fog on the highway. They've been mandatory on all cars here for about 30 years. Trouble is that some people forget to switch them off and you end up with eyes like saucers if you're behind them in traffic.

But if there's one thing they're great for, it's tailgaters at night, especially if they've left their high beams on :D

Not that I'd ever condone doing this because it undoubtedly contravenes some part of the Rules of the Road I've long since forgotten, but my old Renault 5 may possibly have been rather effective in this capacity, what with the rear lights being high up on the C-pillar ;)

That si one sweet xj! Would love to have a diesel one with wood grain! Did they make such a beast?

Take a look here and here. Neither one does a great job of showing it off, but it is there.

I just like watching the glow plug and coolant indicators light up next to the instrument panel before starting :D

Jeep looks so clean! Very nice example of our trucks.. congrats. Did the rear spoiler only come on the orvis trim model?

What does the "Smokers group come with"? seems like you have the same sort of coin tray/maybe ash tray below the transmission shifter.

Yep, that's the front ashtray; it's also where the switches for the heated seats live if you've got that option, but you lose the ashtray. FWIW, it is possible to have both options - mine does.

I just find it mildly amusing that the European Equipment Group was coded as ABBA :D

I like that spare tire cover.

Interesting that the tire is on the left side, I always thought they flipped that since my '96 has tire indentations on both wheel wells. (my '89 does not, I just figured it was Chrysler cost cutting).

It seems a bit random, some UK Cherokees have the spare on the left, some on the right. I think it would make more sense on the right though that blocks the cubby hole.

Maybe they decided to forgo the safety of the big blind spot while changing lanes in order to provide the CD changer for hte luxury models. :wow: Can't put hte changer on the other side because the fuel spout is in the way..

True, but that's where the CD changer resides in RHD; I'm wondering if that could be a determining factor.

Every van version of the XJ I ever saw had it moved to the right, though. Seems odd that they'd go to the trouble of moving the spare for RHD when the rear side windows are actually steel panels.

so this jeep was completely built in the USA right? Like they did not add the rear sun visor and leveling headlights in the UK. Wonder why they would not sell these kind of things through dealers in the USA?

A couple of updates. I've put a 12v power outlet in the rear so that I can plug in my coolbox on camping trips. I used a VW part but it's a match for the outlet on the dashboard on the Jeep. Ran it straight from the battery and it's a permanent live. Works great.

Picked up some tail-light guards from ebay. I couldn't find any new ones for sale but these cleaned up ok after some painting. Not sure they offer all that much protection but they look good.
