1997XJ Poor Idle and Surge

Folks good morning to all,

May some of yu can help me , my Xj is having a Poor Idle and some surge during the warm-up and few times after . I already checked the DTC codes, and except the 12 ( batery disconected) I have no other info. To me it seems like a carburator " Soak ". Just to let yu know I have replaced the Wires/plugs/rotor and distributor cap. My Xj has 50K miles only.... It never had this pblm b4. Any Idea to where I should start looking ?

I don't off hand know what your problem is, but I do know you'll get poor response on the "other" tech forum, which is meant to deal with vehicles other than Cherokees, and is not so widely read. You should repost this question on the OEM Tech forum for the best chance of good answers.

When you do post, add as much detail as you can on how it behaves and when.

id check the O2 sensors. they control the mixture. if one is going bad it will make it sputter at idle. mine does it but i havent fixed it yet. it did trip my check engine light though. HTH

i have the same thing as olivedrab. causes the same symptoms your describing. just dont have the 70$ to put in a new one. it'll be good enough for now.

Folks,

I have confirmed the error code 21, that means O2 sensor circuit failure. I traced the O2 wires to the connectors and I found one wire broked (battery voltage to o2 Heater) !! The broked wire is near to one big conector , located
near to the fire Wall same side than distributor is. Now after fixed that i have tested the car and it seems that the problem was solved. I have good idle, and no more surges .tmrw I´m going to do a road test in order to check, everything.
