1997 XJ, Coil-Over Project - Walker Evans Racing Shocks

Andhi, I don't think anyone has asked you about this yet, but I couldn't help but notice that your thread title refers to your jeep being a 1997 XJ, but that the black jeep in the photos has the body kit and hatch door of a 1996 or earlier. Were the 1997's sold in Indonesia the same in appearance as the 96 and earlier models?

You are very right.
Actually it is supposed to be called 1996, but they are still selling those model until mid 1997.
At the end of 1997, they discontinued that model and they start selling XJ with the Face Lift and different Tail Gate (rounded hatch door), and we call it 1997 Contry Style Cherokee.
So, it is supposed to be called 1996 Cherokee in the US ?

Andhi, i might have missed it, but whats the spring rate on the rear as of right now, I might have to link my rear now too :D
OK,
  • Standard XJ Weight, No Roll Cage
  • Walker Evans Racing Coil Over Shocks Travel 8" (by www.PARTS-M.com)
  • KING SPRINGS Coils (Australia) REAR Lower Coil (Primary), lenght 10 inch, Rate 225
  • KING SPRINGS Coils (Australia) REAR Upper Coil (Tender), lenght 8 inch, Rate 110
  • KING SPRINGS Coils (Australia) FRONT Lower Coil (Primary), lenght 10 inch, Rate 275
  • KING SPRINGS Coils (Australia) FRONT Upper Coil (Tender), lenght 8 inch, Rate 150
  • KING SPRINGS (Australia) is supplied by www.PARTS-M.com in Indonesia
  • XJ now, is lowered 3 inch from standard Left Spring height
  • Coil Over Shocks now is already compressed 5 inch, leaving 3 inch for compression, and the initial 5 inch for droop.
  • At the moment, I have set the SPRING STOPPER COLLAR (to limit the movement of dual coils) about 1cm from the position of the spring divider, so that when the spring divider hits the stopper, the lower stiffer coils will come into action.!!!
  • HOWEVER, this has not been tried on the STREET, so I can not give you opinion on how it handle and feels on the street.
Remind me later in 3 days when the front is finished, so that I can put the right lenght and rate for you to start with...

Remember, with coils, you just have to play around to get the ride quality that you want....,
there are just so many combinations of coils, and also shocks compression and rebound rate....

if you look at post 15, it's definitely older body style, but what it says on the title is a good question. it's good though, the old style is better.
HA HA HA.....

I'll trade this with the new MODEL if there are someone outthere who wants to have PRE-1996 Cherokee...:loveu:
So, bring your 1997-up to Indonesia, and you can take this for free...

Come on....., the new model looks much sexier and nice...

Andhi, what are you doing for a rear sway bar, if anything?
DEFINITELY a sway bar for COIL-OVER applications !!!

However, I am going to finish the front first and install the sway bar later on.

It will be s stiff sway bar, since it is use mostly on-street. The arms/linkage on the sway-bar will have different adjustable holes, so that I can adjust the ratio of softness/stiffness.

Once it is done, I'll post pictures...

The existing AMG Wheels are 8.5x18 with 255x55x18 tires,

For SHOW-CAR Picture on the next edition of INDONESIAN JIP (JEEP) Magazine, I'll put BBS Wheels.

Why ?, because I have one on my garage. At the moment it is in a repair shop beingh straightened, balanced, and PAINTED in PEARLS BLACK.
The wheels are more "OPEN" look, so that I can show-off the COILS behind the wheels...

bbs_ch_ci3_l.jpg

It will have 235 x 35or40 x 18 Tires (below is tires picture for example).
Tires brand will be different...

When are you going to post the rates?

I am going to be converting the front of my XJ to 12 or 14" C.O. instead of the fox air shox I now have and the rates you are useing would be a great starting point for me.

Thanks
I have out the SUSPENSION Rate Details.

Do you need any other information ???

These wheels are ok but the logo.......
these are mercedes AMG wheels and your car is a "Jeep"
putting an AMG logo wont make it any more sportier or better looking.
I d never put another carmake logo on my jeep cause i m just proud enough with the one on it.

point taken,...
I am very sorry for that.... :explosion

As I told you before, I just took the wheel off from my other car,... and at the moment I am looking for a JEEP CENTER CAP that fits the AMG wheels., but without luck.

I am working in finding a blank center cap and for sure I will put anything that says "JEEP" on it.

If it's that big of a deal (I don't think it is) then just grind away the little leg on the "G" from AMG to make AMC

Yeah, that would look kinda silly too, but only a sharp eye would notice.

That is what you called creative,....:read: :kissyou:

You just have to be put into a corner, then immaginations starts working..... Great :)

I saw the FRONT Set-Up.
Like I said before, this is going to be a SLEEPER with 8 inch Coil-Over.

Never though that my friend would be able to come-up with something nice, simple and NOT Race Look-a-like.
