1997 XJ, Coil-Over Project - Walker Evans Racing Shocks

Just a thought...

8" shocks travel :
At the moment XJ is already lowered
Exposed shock shaft for compression to full axle to bum stop is only 3" (front/rear)
I Still have 5" of shock shaft for droop
Pros- I will be able to fabricate the mounting as an standard factory look.
Cons - Less compression and DROOP !!

10" shocks travel :
At the moment XJ is already lowered
Exposed shock shaft for compression to full axle to bum stop is only 3" (front/rear)
When the car is put back into Original height, it will have 50/50 compression to droop (5 inch)
I will have 5" of shock shaft for compression and 5" shock shaft for droop
Pros- I will NOT be able to fabricate the mounting as an standard factory look.
Cons - Lots compression and DROOP !!

Questions ::confused1 :confused1 :confused1
  1. Can you use 15x29" inch tires or 30" inch tires on standard XJ ?
  2. On standard XJ height using 29 or 30 tires, will you be able to do moderate adventure trail without rubbing the tires to the fender or anything else ?
  3. Should I use the 10" and re-do all of the shocks mounting, or just leave it as it is with the 8" inch coil over ?

i say leave the 8's

a 31" tall tire thats 10.5" wide on stock width/backspaced rims will fit without rubbing on the older bodystyle jeeps like ours, even with the sway bars disconnected.

make sure the bump stops are low enough to keep the tires out of the fenders, i ran 30x9.5's on a saggy stock sprung xj, it cleared ok but i didnt flex it out.

Very good point, thanks for the input. I'll make sure the full compression of bumpstop will limit the tires out of the fenders.

DONE.....
Front Left Wheel (Lowered, Final Ride-Height, Close-Up)
18" Wheel, 255x55x18 Tires,
Compression to bottom shocks 3"
Can be lowered 1 more inch

I think you need to post ALOT more pictures of how you did the front mounting. It looks very good thought, from what i can see of it.

As for adjusting ride height how close to level does it sit? I would try and get it to sit as close to level as possible, or maybe slightly tail high, (i like that look) but post some full side view pics. remember that the rear flares mount a couple inches lower than the front, so it will always look tail low if you go by the flares.

I will for sure,.... as soon as I re-sized the pictures and up-load them...

Is it so,... ???

I just LOVED COIL-OVERS, So easy to tune the Ride-Height, a simple twist on adjusting STOP RING and then .....:repair:

How about this "FRONT" DRAGSTER LOOK ? :gonnablow

i guess that's why i think you should have the stance a little tail high. Ignore the roof line and try and even out the space in the wheelwells, at least to a certain degree. what im saying is that if it where mine i would lower the front some more and see how it looks. or maybe lower the front a little and lift the rear, Im not sure what the handling effects will be so im going purely on looks.

for LOOKS, maybe adding a beatifull indonesian girl on the passanger side....? :greensmok

OK, here we go...
Front, still have 1.5 inch of up-travel

Rear, can still be lowerd 1.5 inch, and still have 1.5 inch of up-travel

{dragster looks picture}

yeah well if you add the girl for the looks then you BETTER post some pics.

I think it looks okay (dragster look) like that but now after actually seeing it maybe just level it out and call it good, you did want it to look close to stock right?
