anybody had any experience with Scouts?

i am checking one out for my less mechanically inclined pal this weekend.

anything 'common problems' i should look out for?

thanks!

andy

yeah i have 2 there not bad rigs. how about more info. is it stock, lifted. what all has been done to it.

rust, electrical was the main issues i came into and trying to get the darn thing to pass smog.

My first truck was a Scout 800B and I currently own a 1969 1100B 4x4 pickup. Scouts are pretty basic and very stout, but we really need more info to advise you. It will likely have a 304 or 345 V8, the second is preferred since they get the same mileage (both are fine) and a Torqueflight 727 or a T19 4 speed with a Dana 20 transfer case and a D30 up front and D44 in the rear. The electrical gets really messed up because IH was not real great at color coding their wiring and simply the age of the truck. Many of them have posi's in both diffs, look for the warning label. Basically if it starts and runs smoothly and all the electrical works, watch for rust and the normal check for body damage and prior repairs, but otherwise you will be looking at a great truck!

Work Detail

# installed custom "Drivelines NW" (http://www.drivelinesnw.com/) $500 double CV driveshaft
# installed Back Country Binders "Straightsteer" ($80)
# installed new custom front U-bolts with 6 degree caster correction shims ($70)
# installed leather wrapped Chevrolet 14" steering wheel - huge difference in driving! horn still works too.
(these last 3 changes made a HUGE difference in driveability)
# rewired alternator/starter so huge amounts of current don't go through dash board ammeter.
# removed, stripped, and repainted dash board and shifter covers
# repainted the gauges, polished the covers, and got all of them working except the fuel gauge and ammeter
# replaced and rewired cigarette lighter
# installed new speedometer cable - it works, but needs a ratio adapter to be completely accurate
# installed review mirror with reading/entry lights
# modified wipers to take regular 12" wiper blades - you can get them from any auto store now
# installed better condition glove box
# installed mitsubishi montero seats - big improvement over the stock low back buckets.
# installed new door jamb switches so the interior lights (and new rearview mirror lights) work
# installed good condition replacement Dana 44 (from Back Country Binders) w/ the 3.73 ratio ($300).
# installed all new rear brake hardware when I replaced the axle - this includes wheel cylinders, springs, shoes ($100)
# installed new master cylinder

Negatives

# Was in a fender bender, resulting in a damaged passenger side fender and front bumper. There is also some minor damage to the grill. I put on a used fender and straightened the bumper, but the inner fender could still use some work.
# Body is rusty in the normal Scout spots, but it's a tough chunk of steel that still feels solid.
# parking brake needs adjustment
# gas gauge doesn't work (99% sure it's the sender, likely the float)
# ammeter doesn't work (by design since disconnected to reroute charge away from dash)
# drivers side door doesn't lock with a key - key fits but the locking mechanism is not working - I pulled a good condition locking mechanism from junk yard that's ready to install.

Extra parts included
# Dana 44 axle with trac-loc but has chipped ring gear
# 4 spare tires on original wheels w/ ORIGINAL hubcaps
# 1 spare tire that's a little newer than the others
# 4 body panels with less rest then current: driver and passenger side fenders and driver and passenger side quarter panels (front fender is the one installed)
# 1 passenger side door w/ window removed
# original low back bucket seats and seat bases
# original 17" steering wheel
# 1 used brake booster
# 1 old master cylinder
# various condition stock gauges

It does not get much better than that in terms of equipment... right down to the Petronix conversion (the best next to Davis DUI IMHO). The front Dana 44 is an especially nice addition. Since a lot of electrical work has been done I would take a REALLY hard look at the wiring because so many "improvements" are hack jobs, especially since the dash has been worked on pretty extensively. Have the PO take it in and have the Rhinoliner resprayed since it has a lifetime warranty.

The key question... What is the price?

yeah whats the price. it could just be plain old bed liner u can buy at any auto parts store. still check the floors. is the entire floor bedlined or just the rear. if so is there any carpet left, check under it.

alot of people will bedline floors to get rid of some major rust issues. im not sure if u have to deal with smog were u r.

one other thing to keep in mind if he gets it is tying the roll bar into the frame.

i would guess that when my '61 scout 80 was built they found a killer deal on green wire! about all the wires in the thing were GREEN!

75 ScoutII with 345/727 was my first 4WD. Ran real well, IH used some of the better components of other manufacturers in the build. Too bad the East Coast salt ate the body's away.

The top was a real mother to try and install alone... heavy.

The best website for Scout info is www.binderplanet.com. It used to be the binderbulletin but there was a falling out and all the info went to the new site.

That is hilarious! My 69 pu is nightmare because of that green wire!

I haven't been into it in a long time. I didn't know any of that happened. I just noticed that binderbulletin looked a bit different and "thinner".

Yep, all of the original binderbulletin information, threads, and forums went to binderplanet. There was a falling out between the webteam and the owner of the binderbulletin.

well i checked out that scout with my buddy.
the guy wanted 3k, which i thought was a great deal.

the problem is, my pal wanted it as a dd - and it would have worked, just a bit 'rough'

the truck was so much fun to drive - wow i miss a manual trans.
my buddy was too timid to try driving it, he is pretty 'new' to the stick shift.

anyways, i wish i had the money and time and storage to have this rig.
its rad.
