jeep alts are externally regulated, through the engine computer. 14.8 is high for a batter with the car off, should be between 11.5ish and 13ish. I work at Advance and occasionally I see someone come in with wierd numbers on the battery, and outrageous alt numbers, easy fix is to have the computer flashed. Have them both checked out on the car, and make sure that the kid running the machine knows what he/she is doing, we have a coule of employees who are retarded.
more than a couple cause I ran into 5 of them today. I paid extra money to have a special ordered part delivered in 2 days ($20) that would normally take 14 days. Its been 4 days, still no part and they don't want to give me my $$$ back that I paid for the 2 day shipping. If I went with the 14 day, it would have been $10 shipping charge, if I went with 2 day air it was $20. I paid $20 and it definately wasn't 2 days. Advanced is retarded, or am I since I paid in advance :flame:

looking in the original post profile shows the Alt. in question is on an '88 Jeep. This is an internally regulated Delco "CS" style alternator.

And yeah, having someone who knows how to run the equipment is always a plus, but I would steer clear of telling someone their battery should be between 11.5ish and 13.0ish at rest. A fully charged battery should be at 12.65V. 2.108V per cell X 6 cells = 12.65V. Abattery at 11.5V is actually close to 60% discharged-- will usually start the vehicle if everything is working correctly, but it's still a sign of underlying problems.

P.S. who hired the retards? and did they get their Work Opportunity Tax Credit for it?

What the hell did you order? I have never had to pay for shipping on anything ordered though Advanced.

When I ordered from advance I had to pay in advance but there was no shipping charge. Maybe because it was the standard ground. Perhaps if you sped it up like you did it would cost more...makes sense.

Anything ordered that is in their supply chain is available without shipping

Anything they do not regularly keep in inventory throughout the company that would require dircet shipping from the manufacturer has a shipping charge associated with it. I have been burned a couple times on the shipping. The type of shippind used ends up correct, except often the manufacturer is not set up for same day turnaround order fulfillment, there is often a two or three day lag before it ships-- all be it "second day" from that point.

It pays to get an expected arrival date when you order (actually on the same screen where you chose the type of shipping) and make your decision based on that.

hope this helps--Shorty

ok os i cheked it when it was runin and it reads 15.9(at radio wires)-16.5+/-at the bat
yeah, 16V at the battery is a bad thing.

sounds like you're gonna be putting a new alternator in that thing.

Funny how the Jeep gods work sometimes, don't you think?

First time I've been on this board in probably a year or more and there's somebody local on here with a charging issue. It just so happens that my fiance rebuilds alternators. Whereabouts are you? we may be able to help you out.

yea, when I say 11.5ish at the battery, thats for the low end, it accounts for the people who serve as most of the business for our store who live right behind it in the ghetto. So they crank it up, blast the stereo and drive a half mile to have their crap tested. battery reads low because the alturnator never has a chance to charge it. That voltage range is generally what the tester will call ok. I have seen it test batteries as low as 9.5 as good, just needing a charge. And there are a lot of stupid people that work for us, at our local store we have managed to weed out all but one guy, but I wont vouch for anyone in your area. As a whole I think the company sucks at knowledge. But it does serve as a good part time job till I graduate and commission.
