i've just been looking at the pics of some of you rock crawling, and i have to ask do you ever get so stuck that you have to abandon ship so to speak, because the car is unretrivable

no. you have to bring proper recovery equipment along, like tow straps, winches, and other vehicles to pull off of. you can't just leave a jeep.
