Well its in and working. Auto dim, temp and compass. My fist trip to the bone yard was what I though was an auto dim, compass, temp but ended up being just auto dim with compass. So this trip (today) I found the autodim, compass, and temp from a late model suburban. sorry didnt clean mirror befor the pics enjoy

Gentex-177 mirror
7 pin connector
GM wire harness color function
PIN 1 PINK POWER +12 volts
PIN 2 BK CHASSIS, GND
PIN 3 LT GRN BACKUP LIGHTS
PIN 4 GY TO AUTO DIM OUTSIDE MIRROR
PIN 5 PINK TO AUTO DIM OUTSIDE MIRROR
PIN 6 DR GRN/WT TEMP PROBE
PIN 7 BK/WT TEMP PROBE

I only used pins 1,2,6,7. The mirror and compass and temp are powered by the 1,2 pin. The temp sensor is wired via the 6,7 pin The temp sensor is Gm 15047946 or Borg Warner #wt5520 and the sensor plug is GM#12101856 or Borg Warner #pt5706. I ended up getting the borg warner #'s from work since I work at O'Reilly auto parts.

Pin 3 is so that the mirror goes to fully open whenever you put the car in reverse, so that you can see everything behind you clearly. Not really needed but it's a nice feature. I guess pins 4 and 5 feed a signal to the outside mirrors so that they will also darken.

Do you know what year Burban it was out of? I imagine 2000-about 2004 was the same right? My dad's '07 has one also, but it has onstar on it too; and I would rather not fool with that.

How do you distinguish (by sight) between the two?

EDIT: DUHHHH.. i didnt look at the pic close enough. So how did you mistake the first one if the buttons are on the mirror?

my own stupidity. I didnt look to carefully at it. Just saw that it had a compass botton and didnt notice the other botton said mirror and not temp.

Did you have to grab the glue-on button for the glass from the donor or did the XJ button fit the mirror?

The mirror uses the same wedge style botton that was on my windshield already.

Finally scored the right mirror with temp and compass. Bought it on ebay and wasnt able to get any wiring or the temp sensor. Mine came from a 97 Tahoe.

Thanks for those part numbers, i'll see what the local AZ charges for them.

Looking online it would cost $40-50 to finish up this install buying the parts at AZ or ebay. So i decided to try my luck scavenging.

I stopped at the local yard on saturday, found an S-10 Blazer with the ambient temp sensor and mirror pigtail. Mirror was gone. So i cut the sensor and pigtail, then noticed the hole above mirror that held an overhead console.

Looking at my mirror pigtail it has 5 wires and compared to the pin ID above mine is similar but without the temp sensor leads. Mine has the following, with locking tab at top.

Pin1-Dark Grey.. different than the pink 12v above.
Pin2-Black
Pin3-Lt Green
Pin4-Lt Grey
Pin5-Pink
Pin6-Empty
Pin7-Empty

I thought maybe i could still use this connector if i could move the wire/pin from positions 4/5 to positions 6/7. Which i was able to accomplish  But being electrically challenged i'm still not out of the woods...

Where should i tap the 12v (ign hot) power from? Inline fuse?

Where do i connect the #3 reverse wire to?

Did your XJ come with overhead console wiring? If so you will have White w/ Black stripe wire in the bundle that will give ignition power. Otherwise you will have to run the wire down the A-pillar to the fuse box.

The reverse wire can be fed from a backup light relay or the NSS wire or anything else that has 12v when transmission is put in Reverse. With some luck you can tap into that inside the vehicle (maybe the TCU pins have a Reverse signal?). Run that wire up the A-pillar too.

Actually let me restate that: if the device you are installing has a lower amperage rating than the existing fuse then you should add a fuse to protect the device. I don't know the amperage rating of these mirrors or the rating of the fuse box circuit that you will end up using so ...

I emailed Gentex, they were no help. Just telling me to use a 12v ign hot source. No mention of amperage requirement.

I'll try my luck once i kick this cold.

Not to piss in your cheerios but I'd be concerned about it staying there.

I've had my light OEM mirror fall off while on a spirited trail (sometimes the screw rattles out and it jumps off the button and sometimes the entire button has divorced itself from the windshield). Anyway I'd occasionally make sure the set screw is tight and if you're driving fast on a rough trail be ready.
