I build a rack out of 6 jcr gutter mounts and 1 inch square steel tubing (.90 I think). Plenty strong, laid it against a tree more than once, no damage to the roof or rack.
Make sure its worth messing with, the Heim in mine went bad in less than a year. May be worth looking at upgrading instead of trying to make it better. You will only get another inch or so of droop before it binds anyways
Issue you might run into is the shock angle, move the axle too far forward, shock is at a steep angle, plus caster at pinion angles become an issue. You get less than an inch forward, based on my experience
I have towed my utility trailer (boxed frame, approx 900lbs) loaded with a couple thousand pounds of yard supplies, several times with 4.5" lift and 33's, no sway bar. The poor braking is always more of a concern than the way it handles.
Biggest difference I noticed was the increase in ground clearance for the driveshaft, when I switched to hp. But I am also running more lift w/ no pre-cat, so no clearance issues
I got to test my Aussie for the first time today and was very happy with how much it improved my offroad capabilities, however mine is in the rear. For the front on slick daily driver conditions, not sure if I would like that. I would wait, save and go selectable for the front
I just had my gears installed and was curious about the break in period, noticed this thread and started reading. Now I have a few empty beers, and a little bug crawling across the floor in my bathroom. I think ill change the oil in 500 miles and move on.
Almost all of the armor on my jeep is jcr, and I havent had a single issue with their product or customer service. My experience is they run a tight ship, and deserve only positive feedback.
