Yet another reason to fix my XJ

Box kicker

So ever since I bought my XJ in February the check engine light has been on for various reasons, some went away like adjust linkage on 4WD and some I had to take care of like 5 new tires, a rim, completely new power steering, and I also changed all the fluids and filters!. I cleared the codes hoping that it would finally kill my check engine light for a while but when I started up again.... there it goes. My next task is to clean the neutral Safety Switch! I learned how to do it through numerous threads so now I shall take on another task and hopefully then I can have a jeep that runs good! :piratefla

Will a bad NSS throw a light? I wouldn't touch the NSS if you don't have the classic symptoms of it being bad.

Depends on how they fail. If they're out of adjustment, it'll throw a light pretty quick because the Jeep will see a signal from the NSS that it's in, say, neutral..but in reality it's in drive and you're doing 50mph. It doesn't like seeing that and will let you know pretty quick. This is mainly an issue though if you've had it off once already and accidentally knocked it out of adjustment while torn apart.

What codes are you getting and do they pertain to the NSS? Just running in blind on what to fix will waste alot of time and money in some cases I know because I have done that before.

well it threw a code saying Transmission Range sensor A. so I looked it up did some simple research and most people said that the NSS needed to be cleaned or replaced that's just what I looked up on forums tho. I cleared the code hoping it would go away but on the next start it came right back. I've been paying closer attention to it as well that while with the break on it'll jump a little or when at a light and I accelerate that it'll rev then jump into gear I guess if that makes sense. I haven't done anything yet I'm waiting until the next paycheck to stay within my budget
