This argument goes on and on. I have 1/4" on mine and I'm pretty sure some of the gouges are 1/8" deep. I wouldn't do anyting less than 1/4" if you plan to use them. The gas mileage argument is pointless.
^^^^ X100
When I was picking which thickness to run. I walked over to my selection of sledge hammers and pick up the biggest one (wieghing in at around 18-20 lbs.). I then walked over to my metal racks and grab a couple different guages of 2X6" tubing, put them on the concrete and took the hardest wack that I could at them. Come to find out it was a unanomious decision. The 1/8" colapse about 3/4 the way thru, the 3/16" colapsed about 1/3 of the way and the 1/4" just got a scrap and a very slight indent. So I went with the obvious one. 1/4" all the way
When I get my Waggy 44's under the rig and with the Y'link long arm kit installed I'll be making my belly pans out of 1/4" as well.
For my bumpers I used 1/4" for the rear and yes that was way over kill. I will be building up a knew rear with 3/16" and sum triangles to make small thickness into strong metal. It's all about triangles and how its all tied together.
I wouldint be worried about the gas mileage as for the bigger tires the lower gearing the areo dynamitics. If you worried about gas mileage go drive a tree huggers vehicle or a prius (oh wait there the same).
