xj police package

I have a 99 XJ that is having transfer case issues (242). When I hit up the yards looking for a case they ask me if I have the police package or not. I have no idea if I do or not.

Is there someway to tell if an XJ has the police package?

I called my local dealer and he did not know a thing about the police package.

Thanks

If you call the dealership with your vin and they do not list police package on the build sheet, then you do not have it..
Out of curiousity, what trouble are you ahving with the 242 in your vehicle (a 99) that makes you to look for replacement?

Doe it have lights and a siren? Joke actually, but I would like to know what differences the police package has to the transfer case? Is it better in some way? Or is it equipped w/ selecttrack vs. command trac? Let us know if you find out more about the police package.

The police package has a couple things that I know of Ive seen them with a column shifter, and a in cab fast idle control. I have heard of but never saw one with a bench seat.

The other day, myself and 5 other trucks were fourwheeling late at night on public land, and the cops showed up on the trail with a police xj, like an '00 or '01. We followed him out and he got lost. We had to modify the trail and do some extreme spotting to get him out. He only scraped the tail pipe but he didn't care. When we got out of the trail, 2 other cops were there and all of us bull$hitted for a while and we went home. They had nothing on us! We got some pics on someones camera of the cop jeep on the trail, I'll see if I can get a hold of em.

According to Chrysler, the police package included gas shocks, thicker sway bars, anti-lock brakes, column shift automatic transmission, and transmission cooler and a doughnut holder.
Do you have any pics of the last one by any chance? It's hard to eat a donut while wheeling with a stick shift :D

If you get the ones that aren't filled with creme or jelly you can stack them around the shifter. Very convenient snacking.

Mine is a 96 and has the police package. I've got the 242, shifter is on the floor, not the column. I do have a tranny cooler and ABS. Also has front tow hooks and a limited-slip turdy5. I was told somewhere that they had a hevy duty suspension as part of the police package. It does have the extended idle switch too. FWIW the title says "police special". Another thing is the guage cluster, under the spedo it says "certified clabration". No tach. I have yet to locate the doughnut holder. Where is it located? :laugh3: Oh, and it also has several holes in the roof from the light bar and antenna's. I am curious to know if there is differences in the t-case, or is it the same as all of the other 242's out there.???

Ok... I talked to the dealership and no one knew anything about the police package. So I guess that I don't have one.

As far as what is going wrong. I purchased the Jeep with 30,000 +/- on the odometer. It never would go into 4 low. Then last week while my wife was driving it (it is a daily drive, no trail time) it just started to grind and would not drive. I put the transfer case in neutral and the grinding stopped. When I put it back into either 2 or 4 high the grinding came back. So I assumed that it was the 242 that was giving me trouble.

I pulled the case and opened it up. It seems that the low range shift fork was warn down to about nothing and the teeth on the shift sleeve were all chewed up.

What really sucks is that it is going to cost me more to rebuild the case than it will to just replace the case with one from a yard.

Does anyone know how much fluid goes into a 242?

well in reading the owners manual for my XJ it says something that is a little confusing. For the automatic transmission it says to use Mopar ATF or equivalent labeled DEXTRON II or MERCON fluid. For the Transfer Case it says to use MOPAR ATF or equivalent labeled DEXTRON III or MERCON fluid.

I am guessing, since both the tranny and transfer cases say to use Mopar ATF, that one of those is wrong on the Dextron II vs Dextron III.

Now which one is it?

My 01 calls for Dexron III in the trans and ATF +4 (Mopar) in the xfer case.
My guess is the xfer case is a little harder on the fluid and they recommend
the highest grade. Here's another good one, it also recommends Mopar power steering fluid (clear) but the stealership uses the ATF +4 to top them off or when replacing. They say its ok to use and lots cheaper, the Mopar PS fluid was near $11 a qt. and the ATF +4 was only $4.80. Go figure...

Here's what you got with the Police Package in 1995

HD Gas Shocks
HD Front and Rear Sway Bars
HD Cooling System
140 Amp Alternator
Extended Idle Switch
Trac Lok D35
Full Size Spare
Front and Rear Recovery Points
(Mine's a Floor Shift AW4)

One other item I've seen on ex-LE XJs in the junkyards: 10" brakes. Coincidentally, these are listed as available parts in Kragen's computer...

i saw here a while back that the 242 in cop xj's were a HD version-?(of the 242) my owners manual for my canadian 95' w/242 says dext III in the trannie, & DEX II in the transfer. wierd... also, i went to the local boneyard about a week ago, and they had just gotten in a 99' cop version with a burned up motor. it had a floor shifter. the best way to find out what it is is to take the circular build id tag off the old case and do a search as to what the numbers mean. then just match the tag up.

Everyone is missing the dead give away, 120 mph speedo. And like Haleyes said, it says Certified calibration underneath it. The police package did get a HD 242, as well as the export XJ's. I don't know exactly what the difference is though. I used to have a parts list that had all those goodies: factory snow plow, hidden winch, automatic leveling sytem.............:rattle:

Although I can't remember the part number, the price for the police speedo for a '91-'96 is around $260...............:puke:

so the hd 242 is interchangable with a reg. 242 isn't it? if it is, anybody want to buy a used reg 242? :D oh yeah, what rear end did the cop xj's come with?

At least mine did.

I went and looked and got a pic of the tag.

Couldn't get the camera to focus very good on the shiny surface.

I'm curious as to the "Heavy Duty" issue.
Sombody care to look at their 242 tag and compare the differences?
