xj police package

What does a column shifter do for the cop driving it, specifically what advantages does it give. Oh, of course, its the very conveinent "donut-hanger".

They put in an aftermarket I guess you would call it a "cop-console". Its got the switches for the lights, sirens and radio mounts, stuff like that.
Something kind of like this:

Sombody care to look at their 242 tag and compare the differences?

Anybody? Please?!?!

Thanks, 5-90

Thought maybe the "J" after the 242 meant something.

yes haleyes. you have the hd 242. your vehicle specs match the standard police package, which includes the HD242. and it is different than a reg. 242. not sure what exactly inside is different, i'm guessing it has something to do with beefier full-time.
i have 2 242 cases, 1 of them a grand, and neither one has the -J on the tag. however, a 1999 marked police xj that the boneyard where i live got in a month ago has the standard police features and the 242 tag has a J.

i got my 99 from the government. it came with a searchlight on the A pillar, holes in the roof from light bars and antennas, np231, tranny cooler, hooks, skids, and the 29 spline 8.25. the cream of the crop as far as im concerned ;)

Thanks a bunch!

Now I've got to find out the differences. I am confident the local dealer will just look at me funny and have no clue as to what a 242 t-case even is. Any suggestions on where to start?

You need to reconsider what dealer you frequent. Are they a Suzuki dealer or something that also sells Jeeps. Try somewhere that has a history of being the Jeep dealership or try to find someone there thas is experienced besides in the new yuppie jeeps. I would try other sources for parts as much as possible, ebay, members here, www.tellico4x4.com. etc. I would also like to know there are any external differences or if they are all internal (to the t-case that is).

Also I am kind of upset that the exported XJ's got the heavier duty t-case standard why American's diddn't and its an American car. Maybe because this is the only country where people buy a 4x4 vehicle without any intention of leaving pavement.

yup.
- try places that specailize in rebuilding and reselling transfer cases. (i would start on on the internet)
-also, search for the new process gear homepage: they gotta have one to at least market to/deal with their recievers(chrysler, gm, etc)
-the h2 is supposed to have one, but from what i've gathered, gm had the awsome idea to remove the low range and sell it as an option-!?!? you might try there, too!
-also, you gotta post this when you find it!!!

From http://www.newventuregear.com/ (funny how we all keep calling them NP :D ), it appears as though they've been bought out by Magna Drivetrain. I put in a call to the Syracuse number; hopefully they'll call back once they get the VM.

Easiest way to find out if you have a NVG242 HD or not is to pull your drain plug and refill it, the regular 242 takes about 2 3/4 pints (1.3 ltr) and the HD version takes 6 1/2 pints (3.1 ltr). Or you can try and use the build code data on your t-case id plate, or remove the case and weight it (the HD case is about 5-9 lbs heavier I think).

It does -- "Jeep"

The heavy duty 242s in Dodge Trucks are tagged 242D, and I think the super duty 242s in the military Humvees are 242-AMG or 242-HD-AMG (or something like that)

wow. you're so smart. so here's one for ya'; did dc do the same out of stock-switcharoo thing with these that they did with axles, etc.? so you gotta look at it or get a build sheet to know what it is?

Well when I changed the fluid in the T-case in March, it did take more than what I had been told. I thought I would never get it full. Think I'll go to the stealership in the morn. and see what they might be able to tell me. Thanks fot the info guys.

According to Chrysler, the police package included gas shocks, thicker sway bars, anti-lock brakes, column shift automatic transmission, and transmission cooler and a doughnut holder.
The Column shifter doubles for the doughnut holder, The wide T-handle auto shifter and Big round stick shifter was to big to fit through the hole of the doughnut.

Its got a cop motor, cop tranny, cop tires, cop shocks, cop brakes.

But it still ain't the Bluesmobile.

Fix the lighter.

Well, the dealership wasn't a whole lot of help. He was able to tell me that in their puter, there is two different 242's. What the differences are is still unknown. On his puter it did say for one of the 242's "export only of police package". He printed off a build sheet for me too. All it says about the t-case is "selec-trac 4wd system". I am still somewhat of a newb at this stuff so I have a few other things to invistigate too. Build sheet says Dana 35C, is this for c-clips? Also says Dana M30, whats the M for? Is that any different from the norm? It also has "Heavy Duty Engine Cooling" and "Suspension-Heavy Duty".

"Build sheet says Dana 35C, is this for c-clips?"

Although the 35C has c-clips, I've read that the "C" stands for custom...Dana left the final machine work up to the manufacturer.
