I switched gears to 4:88's and now I need the proper speed gear so my speedometer will stop bouncing all over the place and I can kill the check engine light. It's a np231. If anybody has one for sale or knows where I can get one that would be great. Thanks.

Regearing won't cause these symptoms. Sounds as though the connector on the sending unit where the speedo gear is located, might be loose/bad. Disconnect it, clean it and reconnect. Have you tampered with the speedo gear, as the are clocked in 120 degree settings (3 ways to install)?

I run 4.88's with 35's and my speedo is off about 8mph at 60, but runs fine. I have had the "bouncy speedo" and for me, it has always been a dirty connector.

Again, to be more specific:
A new speedo gear can increase the true accuracy of your gauge to the true speed of your vehicle.
It will NOT stop the bouncing of the indicator or warning lights.

It didn't bounce around when I had 3:07 gears. Now it bounces everywhere and causes the jeep to cut out almost like a governor. I heard that I needed a 37 or 39 tooth gear. I'll clean the connection and try to reinstall. I just unplugged the sensor and now it doesn't cut out but the check engine light is on

The plug reseat likely fixed your speedo problem. Now download your engine faults to see why they are on. I think all this is coincidence.

Agreed. I would bet the code is a "no VSS signal" fault due to the intermittent connection.

You still could use a speedo gear to correct the speedo but there is no way for larger tires causing a check engine light via a wrong speedo gear.
