Looking for a 9" third member, big bearing,

Planning on building a new rear third with 5.13s or 5.38s and a full spool and keeping the 35 spline chromo shafts. I am thinking the HP8.8 gears in the rear are not as strong as standard cut 9" gears for the 37s . That also means that i will be going to 5.13s or 5.38s up front, which means ill be running something other than the 30 i have... I'm just in parts gathering mode right now.

Currie put an 8.8" ring gear in a 9" housing? weird. Either way I don't see how that axle regeared won't be plenty strong for 37's and 4.0l power.

yah thats what I'm starting to think too, is that it will be more than strong enough.
currie uses a HP 8.8 ring gear. sucks since there are not a lot of gear options for that.
also have to get the special rebuilt kit from currie too. i can get either 4.88, or 5.43 from currie. yukon sells a 5.13 kit too.

i've seen peeps run ford 8.8's behind bronco's w/ v8's on stuff taller than 37's. And your axle as a whole is a hell of a lot cooler than an 8.8. I'm sure you'll be fine. Have you considered running a couple trailes first w/ the 4.88's to see how it feels before you start spending?

Can't wait to see that beast on 37's.

I'm only planning for the fall. just want to gather parts now. you're right though, ill probably just leave it as is and just grab some 5.13s or 5.29s for the thing and a rebuild kit and go from there.
and then i found some decent prices on G@ housings for TJ44s with gears, detroit, 30 spline alloy shafts, all bracketry, and you can use your Dana 30 outers, but still have deeper gears, bigger locker, bigger housing, bigger ring and pinion. just need to sleeve and truss the whole thing.

mike talked me out of it.
although sometime int he next year ill be building a 44 front and going to 5.13 or 529 and keeping the HP rear end.

are you sure its a 9" and not a dana 35 haha I'm just kidding, totally messing with ya

I havent had any problems with mine Jon, It does run a 9" carrier, like you say the only down side is you have to 8.8 gear set. The upside is there common and cheap. The guy that built mine hasnt seen any of these combos coming back due to a broken ring or pinion gear

nice. they are actually hi pinion reverse but 8.8 gears, not a lot of ratios out there for them. but i think i will be staying with 4.88s after some input from some other guys. i think thats a good compromise

BTW J, how is your rig doing these days? pics?

There is a tremendous difference in strength between a standard cut 8.8 gear set and a reverse spiral gear set in terms of strength. Applying power to the coast side of the gear in a rear set-up forces the ring gear to deflect away from the pinion with tremendous force, distorting the teeth and causing lower pinion bearing failure.

I would not recommend a reverse spiral 8.8 for anything more than 35's behind a 4.0, and even that only with an auto transmission.

/\ this guy knows his shiiit.

I hadn't even thought about the reverse pressure being applied.

Good looking out Crash.

Time to start the collecting.

yah good call. ill stay on the 35s for now until i can figure out a stronger rear end setup.

i do have a regular 8.8 with 4.88s, truss, no locker, lying around, with the super 88 chromos, just needs a spool and some perches and some shock mounts.

that might be better

i plan on throwing a spool in the spare LP 8.8 (standard cut, with a spool and with chromos and c clip eliminator ) , buying a ruffstuff swap kit and cover, and swapping that in and selling the Hi9. not right away, but soon.

then ill sell the Hi9 rear. then ill start scavenging picknpull and craigslist for a Ford driver drop HP60 front. once i get it, ill have WFO narrow it and re spline the shafts, probably throw in a lunchbox up front with some 5.38s, and have them truss it and get the XJ link stuff in there(like the TNT ford hp60 truss kit) . ill also be narrowing and shaving a 14 bolt, full spool, 5.38s.
ill then sell the super 88 rear axle and my built front 30 once those go in. i plan on roughly 60" WMS to WMS, with like 3" backspacing on some 15" rims and some caliper grinding to clear the calipers (the 37s i have are on a 15" rim thats why) my garage is only 83" wide, so i think the 3" back spacing and the 37/13.5/15s should put me around 80"-81" total width so i should barely clear...

BTW thanks for the good advice crash, good looking out.

I'm starting to think this build idea is getting out of line.
i should rethink it. i have so far built this rig very cheap. lots and lots of free parts from part outs.
one tons mean the weak link is the t case. Great, now i need an atlas...it adds up so damn fast

so I'm thinking now:
sell the 37s and the rear currie high pinion 8.8 /9" thing.

35" tires should be plenty fine for most of the wheeling i like to do.
plus if i spool this 8.8 (chromos and c clip elim, truss, too ) and finally swap in the front locker, ill be going from locked rear, posi front, to full spool rear and locked front, that should be great on just 35s....

the sleeved, trussed, LCA skid, and knuckle gusseted HP dana 30 with chromos, 4.88s and lock right with hardened cross pin, OTK currie steering should be plenty strong for years to come, especially since it has already lasted for years of wheeling on 35s anyway....

and ill keep the build cheap.

what i will do iOS over the winter to keep my eyes open for a 4x4 f250 or f350 that is junked on craigslist for like 500-800$ (there are a couple on there right now), and get the front and rear axles for free after parting it out. then just sit and wait for cheap lockers and gears, covers, etc so that way I'm building them on the cheap instead of rushing it.

Not bad Jon, here is the Jeep right before my surgury in March at TSF.

And here is the Jeep out on the sand for Memorial day, yeah I didnt know you not suppose to drive close to the lakes at the offroad parks, apprantly sand drifts over the water and covers it. Hell I was still in 2wd.

Ive been hacking on the front bumper for the last couple days, trying to fix my approach angles, and keep my tires from rubbing.. Oh and here is the stroker motor for my Commando...
