Looking for an AX-15. Mine is starting to make noises and I suspect that it is the input bearing but quite frankly idk for sure. If someone has a good AX-15 laying around unused I would rather swap in a trans that I know is good rather than swapping out parts on mine and hoping I fix the problem. Not sure what price range to expect but I am hoping for pretty cheap otherwise I may just throw money at mine and hope I fix the right stuff on the first try.

It would be going into a '93 XJ, not sure if the input shaft or anything changed at all over the years... I read a writeup on doing an external slave swap and it mentioned using 95- clutch parts so maybe the '96+ AX-15 changed a bit? :dunno:

expect to spend $200+ for a good, working one.

Yeah, I am going to start shopping the junkyards sooner or later, just figured I would check on here first. If I can motivate my brother or friend to give me a hand dropping the trans I will probably do that soon and take a look at it... try and see if I can figure out if the input bearing is shot or not. Maybe if it's bad enough I can make the assumption that it is my problem.

scott, sam's is your best bet.

cool. thanks. will take a look. I have been shopping around trying to find a replacement input bearing and maybe idk what the hell I am looking for but I can't find anything.

Will have to pull out the FSM or Haynes later to figure out what exactly I will be needing to replace if I do go the repair rather than replace route.

typically they sell entire rebuild kits (bearings, synchros, seals, etc). they go for $200ish. you're better off getting a JY tranny. it's also a ton of effort to replace that bearing.

I was afraid that it would require a full tear down to replace.

my fear is that a JY trans will have problems of its own. I did just find 2 AX-15s on CL for $100 (for both). One has a 3rd gear synchro issue and the other came out of a non-running Jeep so condition is unknown. Tempting to take the chance and hope the unknown one is OK.

3rd gear synchro is the rebuild that i did. not too hard if you take your time. i was looking for a slow winter project. if i were you, spend the $ and get a running one.

hmmm, the JY 2 miles down the road from my house has one with 94k miles on it for $250. Maybe I will give him a call tomorrow and see if he offers any warranty on it or if the parts are tested at all. I'm surprised how cheap it is from him... he pulls everything for you so I expected it to be super expensive.

edit: although carpart does have one in north smithfield RI with 134k miles for only $125. Now I gotta call both and figure out if 40k fewer miles is worth $125 or what guarantees they have for whether it will be OK or not. I know my buddy bought a trans from a local JY once and looked into it.. it had all new synchros and looked completely rebuilt.
