WJ 4.7L V8 swap into XJ?

yea, that is my dream swap, but I want the 400ci LS2. Some nasty motors. Light too.
Cost-wise, a LQ4/9 from a GM truck would probably be cheaper and you can install a LS intake on it. It is still a 6.0L, but is a cast-iron block.. and if you plan on running forced Ind. would be worth it even more. The difference between the LQ4/9 is the Comp. ratio otherwise the same.

Nah get an LS7 some z06 just made 8's with an auto conversion, engine is NA apparently with no spray First AUTOMATIC! C6Z06 in the world! with a 8SEC- Video
LS7 is great, but for what a complete LS7 costs. would be cheaper to go with what I stated above, OR .. build your own. Start with the GMPP Cast-iron LSx block. This can be bored/stroked all the way to approx 511ci. What I would do. Is create my own "LS7" make it 427ci and you can use either GM Perf./stock LS7 parts or aftermarket already there for the LS7. And then you can also use a mechanical TB, unles you choose to use the "fly-by-wire" that the vette's use.

I think the I6 vs. V8 debate is really a lot of hooey.

The I6 feels torquey in our XJ's mainly because of light unibody construction and relatively short gear ratios as well as a lazy camshaft.

V8's don't feel as torquey at low rpm mainly because V8's are put into far heavier vehicles with taller gears.

Put a stock 4.0 I6 into a Suburban or Escalade, and it will drive like a turd.

Put an Escalade/Suburban 6.0 V8 in an XJ and now we are talking!

I will concede that the 4.0 I6 will easily out-torque any modern SOHC/DOHC V6 without variable valve timing at low rpm though...

The AMC-6 was designed almost forty years ago (more?). The final rendition, in 2004, still uses a side-draught head and crappy airbox / exhaust. Single cam, pushrod design, etc.
Yes, folks - a modern V-8 like the 4.7 makes better power / torque at all RPM.
And yes - with a few mods the 4.0 makes a substantial amount more power.
Stroking adds a ton of power to the I-6.
I don't think anyone is arguing that a 4.0 in stock form is a better engine than the 4.7... but a 4.7 Stroker is easier to do than the v-8 and builds all the torque you are likely to need...
Why am I contributing to this silliness..?
Beer.

swaps I think are cool... besides the usual strokers...
360 (same dimensions as the 318)
new Hemi
Cummins 4BT diesel (four cylinder version of the six used in dodge rams and bulldozers and stuff)
Libby Diesel
Mercedes Grand Cherokee diesel (minus smog crap which adds lots of complexity if that's possible)
Old Mercedes turbodiesel... n/a diesels are slooooooooow

...probably other engines that would fit... of course they'd be repaired if needed and turned up a little.

chebbie 3800 supercharged v6 is a good choice as well, especially in a cherokee or Comanche with the 2.8v6
Did they make those in a longitudinal layout? It seems it was a transverse engine.

Unless you're thinking GNX? :D Turbo'd 3.8, longitudinal

Apparently you can take the rwd 3.8 from an f-body and use the fwd 3.8 s/c parts from the buicks/bonnies.

1987 sb 350 L98 in my 89 cherokee. 15city 18hwy with 31's and 355 gearing it will get better gas mileage when it gets regeared.

Yeah I wasn't saying you should blow it, just that from your pics, the 350 sits a good bit lower in the bay than the i-6, and has room to put a blower on top.

i know. Just showing another v8 setup. If ur going to put a v8 in u might as well go more then a 4.7l. I wouldnt go less then a 360 motor. If ur going to spend the time and money dont make it regretful with a smaller motor. Like the guys said a stroker 4.0 will out do that 4.7l. So if ur going to do it go bigger.

Looks like you cut-n-welded your exhaust manifolds. Which ones were they?

First post on naxja, so go easy on me, but I'm definitely not gettin' into the I6 vs. V8 debate either. An important factor in the driveability (sp) equation (with any motor) is the trans. The aw4 automatic is pretty much a toyota trans; think efficiency over asthetics or comfort. My friend's 4.0 GC (far less miles) shifts like it's sittin in a lazy boy after smokin a bowl compared to my XJ, granted he's got a few more lb's. BTW I can't stand japanese cars, so don't get me wrong... If I was doing a complete swap for a different motor, there's no way I would consider putting in another 4 speed. Bolting in a stroker is one thing, but why spend all that money on a dialed in LS1 and still run a 4 speed hydramatic? Just my 2 cents...

well...

how do you plan on hooking an LS1 up to an AW4? Not sure I know anybody stupid enough to try that, I do not even think there is an adapter kit to do it with. The auto you would keep with that would be 4L60, but I would rather see it bring a T56 over, that 6spd is sweet.

Woah... by no means was I suggesting running an AW4 behind an LS1, I'm just saying that the trans makes all the difference. BTW "4 speed hydramatic" means "4L... something" (as in GM has been making "hydramatic" trans's since the early 40's), not an AW4 by Aisin. I didn't mean to confuse. I agree however, an XJ with an LS1 and a T56 would be awesome...
