WJ 4.7L V8 swap into XJ?

Did your crane"s horsepower level off the same?

Didn't have a dyno run with my old Crane 753905 but my best estimate from the performance numbers that I had at the time is 209rwhp/266rwtq. Even by the SOTP there's no noticeable difference.

I just want a 6.1 Hemi crate engine backed by a 545rfe in my XJ. I'd get some SRT8 badges.
Or a Liberty or Bluetec WK diesel.
I've seen mileage figures for a 5.7 Hemi/545rfe swapped TJ done by AEV. The TJ got better mileage by something like 3-4 mpg w/the V8 swapped in. It wasn't a formal test like the EPA uses, but it was the author/tester's experienced mileage. The extra gear on the highway and the engines extra power kept it from working as hard.

Didnt some of the last TJs come with 6spds? How hard would it be to get on of those into an XJ?

What is the bell housing bolt pattern of the 4.7l V8?

I have one in my garage for the buggy and I am considering just putting it in the XJ before it rots away.

What Manual tranny's can I run behind it?

Been searching the net from time to time for over a year but have not found anything.

Seems aftermarket never took off for these motors like they said.

Anyway, I have a complete setup, (would rather not use the auto) wiring, ecu's, and would like to put it to use so any info you have about the 4.7L would be great to know.

I have the 01' model.

I would find out if any Dakotas came with the 4.7/manual combo

If you want a 5 speed, your best bet would be the NV3500 out of a 4x4 ram, or dakota....

as for the auto's A 545RFE. Not to sure if it has the same bellhousing as a 727TF or not.

I think someone was selling an xj w/amc 360 awhile back. I know it was installed, but not running or completed. He had a lot of work in it but had to many projects going. Someone else swapped in a nissan diesel, was running and sold on e bay for like $1600. My 4.0 has over 250k, a bad ring and the crank has already been cut. It really does run well, but smokes a little if you let it idle long. When I first start it up cold it sounds like someone is shooting dice out of a coffee can. Still trying to decide what to do about an eng. I have a spare 4.0 w/less miles and better running but smoking too to rebuild.

You need to start rebuilding that 2nd engine while your current one has some life left in it.

Drove it down to Philly the other day, 65 mph most of the way in 5th. About 75 on the way back and it still runs great. That's w/31's and 3.55 gears untill I swap in the 4.10's I bought last summer. No real hills on the interstate of course. Temp stayed at 210 the whole way untill rush at the toll.

What if you swaped a 4.7 and tranny from a Dakota with the wiring and ECU, thus tricking the XJ in thinking it's a dakota... Then run a divorced t-case and voilà... Not saying I can do it, but I've seen stranger things happen.

You do realize Jeeps are inanimate objects right?

Sure, plop all the mechanics and electronics in. You'll need to do something with the gauges.

I don't get the divorced transfer case bit, Daks came 4x4, no?

I don't know but I'd suspect that a Dak uses a NV231 or NV241 depending on vintage.

well, I guess all we need is for someone to go out and measure the overall lenght of the motor+tranny+t-casse combo and see if it's a close match to the XJ's. From there ¾ of our questions would be answered. All someone has to do is get a roll-over Dak, gut it including the main wiring harness and transplant everything in a XJ, dash included. Should work... :)

Pretty sure you can get some good deals on LS1's on ebay, I didn't read all the posts if you decided totally against going with an LS1 But they when I see them for sale they usually come with a transmission as well. They are some newer engines (2004) + trans for around 3500$. But HCI LS1's can make around 400-450 to the wheels.

yea, that is my dream swap, but I want the 400ci LS2. Some nasty motors. Light too.

Billavista was showing off his new LS2 on our club's forums today. Sweetness... Hell of an engine for a buggy. Too much?
