winch question

Been doing it for years by hand with gloves and no problems. It's not like the cable is made from razor blades. "Holy Cow if I touch that cable I'll get hurt". If you are on the trail, you only have 2 choices after a winch pull ... spool in the cable loosely without using your hands and get a birds nest... or use your hands.

Bottom line, it does not really matter how you get the cable back on the drum, as long as it is snug/tight enough that the cable does not pull into the wraps on the layer below it. Beyond the damage / safety issues associated with a cable wound poorly, there is the issue of pulling it the next time you need it. When you are stuck between a proverbial rock and a hard place is not where you want to discover you do not have the muscle to pull the cable because it’s bound up under itself.
