winch on the back

easy hoss, I'm talking from experience here...I've used these things and it's not all happy faces and quick recoveries. Is it better than no winch? Hell yeah...but sometimes it IS like no winch when you can't get the thing on. And it happens.

We're currently building a rear bumper for an XJ with an integrated winch mount much like my front ARB...yeah the departure angle will be worse than stock, but it will be better than a multimount.

A receiver on 3 sides sounds like you need a locker and some bigger tires ;) LOL. Just jokes, thanks for playing....:D

receiver location

Well, if the day ever comes that I can't get my Multi-Mount winch on and pull myself out because the receiver is buried, maybe then I'll build a bumper of some sort that gets the receiver up good and high. Certainly wouldn't be any harder to do that than to build any other kind of a winch bumper. Then it won't be an issue anymore.

In the meantime it's still not an issue because I've never had that problem, despite using my winch many times in many different kinds of "stuck" over the last 15 years. I will grant you, though, TOZVR, that you're the first person I've run into with criticism of the Multi-Mount approach who has actually used one.

Part of the difference in our collective view points is our experience. Despite our differences of opinion, this is good feedback for those interested in the subject and to the one who asked the question. As far as experience goes, a multi-mount sucks for the wheeling that I do, which is mostly rockcrawling. I haven't run one, but friends on wheeling trips have, and I've dealt with their shortcomings. Most have since changed to a fixed front mount winch.

The comment about needing a winch mounted up front to look bad/cool is borderline offensive. I don't need a winch up front to look bad or cool, my Jeep looks that way anyway. :D :D

Well I think this is a very interesting discussion with lots of good opinions. I am with the Multi mount folks. I made a custom multi mount for my 8000lb winch years ago (before I had ever heard of one) and I have used it on trailers, tractors, trucks, and other places. I have just finished my front bumper with 2" receiver and plan on having the winch slide into it so that it is very high and very close to the front grill (similar to a hard mount) but I can still put it on the back if I want.

I agree that there are down falls to both the hard mount and the multi mount but for most of us I think the multi mount makes the most sense for these reasons.

It can be used on multiple vehicles or uses.
It can be stored inside.
It is less likely to be stolen.
You can let your friend use it.
You can get it to the vehicle that is stuck, not on the vehicle that is not stuck.
You do not need to keep it on you when you drive to work.
Cost of ownership is much better dispursed.
sometimes it is much better (safer) to back out of a stuck than go forward. (this does not mean you can not find a different line and complete the trail).

another plus for multi-mount is you can let youself down a steep slick hill without doing the bobsled thing like i did this weekend in Beasley's Knob.

Thanks for all the feedback! I singed up for a welding class at the tech college and I'm going to make a front winch bumper, but Id still like understand the capacity of the receivers better.
