will jb weld hold?

I was changing out the rear temp sensor on the block and ended up breaking the bolt in the block...long story short...we boared out the sensor and rethreaded the hole...but we accidentaly drilled into the exhaust! So now I have to find a way to plug up the hole.

My question is will JB weld hold up to the heat from both the Coolant and the exhaust exiting from the cylinder? It says on the box that JB is good up to 600*F and I figured that the coolant will reach a temp of 260* max and that's if I'm overheating. How hot is the exhaust exiting the cylinder? The hole isn't in the manifold its in the actual block!

JB weld aint gonna help you. your best bet is to either weld the hole closed or tap it and install a set screw and sealant.

Dunno, give it a shot. Exhaust gasses get real freakin' hot though.

outside of the block not inside. usually mending a broken bolt hole or the like

the worse that can happen is break loose adn clog up the cooling system and wreck the block further. actually the damage is to the head.

??????????????????????????????? the hole is inside the head under the temp sender, he drilled though the water jacket of the head into the exhaust port on the number 6 piston. how are you gonna wrap that?

okay well im thinking of seeing if the rod of a tig welder can fit through the top of the hole and i can warm up the bottom and try and weld it that way...or how could i do it?

remove the exhaust header and weld from the exhaust side. it a much bigger opening an easier control

To weld it properly you would have to clean it THOROUGHLY and use something with a high nickel content to keep it flexible, and even then it is still a good posibility that it will crack like an egg in no time. Bite the bullet and get a head from a JY so you don't ruin the rest of the motor.

tap and plug might work too, but Im betting you are right. time for a new head

Don't even think nor listen to anyone who tells you to JB weld that area! Do it right, take it apart, bring it to a shop and get it fixed. Ya screwed up, suck it up, live and learn.

A "weld" would hold but accessing the area to be welded would be difficult. I would not want to trust JB weld though.

BTW, I think if it fell out it wouldn't hurt anything. It may help some things. When I was a in my teens we raced claimers and I remember several times when we put lead shot into hot cylinders and ran them to bring the rings back to get 1 more race out of the motor. We replaced the plugs and good to go.......

If it fell out then you would have a catastrophy. Coolant and exhaust don't like each other.

Do you know exactly where you're putting it?

Between a water jacket and an area that gets VERY hot. So you have a cooler side and then a HOT side.....

Buy a junkyard head, won't be all that expensive and the idea of not having a patch will be worth the peace of mind, especially if your patch was to fail eventually!!
