Wow, I apparently have the exception to the rule.
2000 Expedition 2WD 5.4L.....NEVER had an engine problem. EVER. Transmission leak, yeah, ball joints, yeah, engine, no. Will even smoke a little on the 275/60-17s if you put the foot down. And towed my boat, dad's boat, 32ft camper, and little bro's 69 F100 without breaking a sweat. Always had regular maint. and I can consistently get 18mpg/22mpg city/hwy with it. Little bro has it now and still has no trouble. Since the 4.6L and 5.4L are modular, where are the 4.6L issues?
My brother-in-law just bought a Tacoma, and loves it. In fact, if I didnt' have 2 vehicles, one a truck, I'd buy one. It's a 4x4 auto, and it moves right along towing his 21ft boat.

I know that V6's have come a long way, heck, some in sports car trim would give V8 cars of the mid 70's - mid 90's a solid whomping but do you really think that in a truch application it would be a good hauler?

I realize that fuel expenses are becoming such a headache but, there is really no substitution for the grunt of a diesel when pulling big loads. For me it'd have to be a try it first and see if it works. Like maybe try to rent one of those Fords first and see how it does.

The Ecoboost is a turbo V6 putting down more power and same or better torque, IIRC, than the 5.4 V8. That engine wasn't built as a base model engine, it was built as an upgrade engine, and has a pretty high towing capacity. The grunt of a diesel comes, in large part from the turbo. Why do people hate on the 6.2 diesel? No turbo. I've heard very little to suggest that they are unreliable, but they have no power thanks to no turbo. The 6.5 came out, same basic engine, slightly larger, but with a turbo. Instantly almost doubled the torque and brought HP up quite a bit too. Just sayin...

I've ridden in a couple 5.4 powered Fords and they seemed to have plenty of power. I drove a 4.6 powered F150 for work and it was a dog. Put a few hundred pounds in the bed and it had to downshift and hunt for gears constantly on hills, even small ones.

I tow with either a Tahoe or a Dodge Ram. Like the 'hoe better cuz it's got leather.

the 'hoe has a 5.3 and the Ram has 5.9, the Ram seems to have problems getting out of it's own way.

you don't need to burn oil to tow a jeep. it's nice, not necessity.

I towed with a 5.4 2000 F150 with the 5.4 to Moab in 2003. It did fine. Had plenty of power. Unfortunately it was a Michigan truck and was a rust bucket. Tailgate, doors were rusting at 3 years old. Also had the manifold studs rust off. I had them drilled em out and put shorty headers on it with a dual exhaust. Was a great setup til gas went up and I sold it...I'd have no problem buying one...just no rust. Also, I changed the spark plugs on mine...took several hours but no issues.

I have a 2000 F-250 5.4. It tows great and has plenty of power. Regularly tow 10k plus with it. I did have a V-10 before this and personally I would go back to one if I didnt go diesel first. The spark plugs do like to come out but I machined some bushings and solved that problem. 286,000 miles original engine, trans rebuild once. Tow with it all the time.
