Wife's KJ/Libby has a brief burning smell after driving?

It really is pretty straight forward. There is a metal coolant line that has to be taken apart with care, but we've never had one break on us at my shop. I wanna say book time on it is something like 2.4 or 2.6 but I'd have to look...it's been a good 6 months since we've done one.

Thanks for the info. I have looked over at lostkjs but couldn't find anything. I'm a newbie on that forum so I could have missed it when searching however.

I've had my share of working on vehicles so I should be good... but it is good to know what to look out for or what tricks others have learned to save time and busted knuckles and parts.

Thanks again for the help and info.

My KJ burns a ton of oil, typically 18gal or so a week ;)

Thanks again and if this is a stupid question just don't respond... :) But, do you know if there is a write-up w/pics so I can read thru it before I attempt the job myself? Also, looking at the Drivers side it would appear there's no need to remove the plugs/coil packs/fuel injectors in order to get the Valve Cover off... would this be correct and the same hold true for the Passenger Side?

Do you have access to a fax machine? PM me with the number if you do. Also, include the year of the KJ.

I can fax you step by step instructions with pictures.

PM Sent. Thanks for sending the info.

No problem...I looked today but ended up getting side tracked. Mitchell seems to be lacking the info, or it's VERY hidden! I'll check again if we're slow tomorrow. I hope we won't be though haha! 25 cars and 5 grand today, 7 cars and $3500 staying the night ready for tomorrow!!

I'll email ya when I send it!

Working on this now and I'm stuck... any tips would be appreacited.

New set of questions... I've started removing things to get access to the Valve Cover and I'm having problems getting the bottom part of the air box removed. Are there some hidden screws holding this to the frame or do I simply need to pull harder to get the darn thing out?

Also, these plastic clips holding the water lines are not really easy to figure out how to remove them... there are a couple little tabs I see holding them, but I tried bending those tabs and broke one of them off and the clips still won't budget. Any help on getting this apart?

Overall pic of where I'm stuck.

Oh... and when removing vacuum and lines I notice that the hose that attached under the Air Intake and to the back of the valve cover (pass side) has a nice split and it looks like some oil was leaking f/there. I'll have to try and replace that line if anyone can give me a part # It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

The airbox is held in by three little rubber plugs in the body. Just grab the engine side and wiggle back and forth while pulling up. It takes a bit of gumption to get it, but they do pop.

Can't help on the clips, never encountered them before. Post over at lostkjs, the people there will help you much quicker.

Thanks for the help in the airbox. I thought it might be that type of fit, but didn't want to break something pulling too hard. I posted this same question at lostkjs so hopefully I'll hear something soon.

Just another followup. Thanks for the tips. Got the airbox out, and just busted those plastic hose 'clamps' to move the coolant lines around. Not a biggie. Pulled the Valve Cover and replaced the Gasket (pain in the rear) and got it all back together.

A couple questions on things I found. I had to remove the Oil Filler 'neck' to get the VC off and when doing so I found what looks like a rusty colored sludge that was covering the inside of this filler neck (which is mounted to the front side of the passenger side Head)

I'm not sure what this is... any ideas if this is normal because I don't see how it could be.

Also, I've noticed the last couple of days that there is a lot of white smoke coming out the exhaust, more so when cold, but way more than the normal white smoke you see on cold mornings coming f/the exhaust. The libby doesn't go thru coolant, like you'd think if there was a head gasket leak and it doesn't really burn oil. When pulling the valve covers off what I could see of the rockers and cam looked almost like new. Of course I couldn't see the valves so I'm wondering if I have something mechanically wrong. I'm not sure where to go f/here other than maybe a better mechanic if I can find one. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you, just been busy at work. I spend a long time today, and it seems as though Mitchell doesn't have the step by step on the VC gaskets for the KJ. Sorry it didn't work out, but I tried my best! Hope it all goes well. BTW, book time is 2.5 hours :)

No problem. I appreciate the effort. It was mostly straightforward & I got threw it. Hopefully it wont need a new head gasket as that may be above my pay grade and have to go to a shop. :(

Hopefully the white tailpipe smoke will go away. I'm going to keep a close eye on the coolant levels, temperature and how she runs.

sludge in the oil filler neck could be from condensation or a malfunctioning crankcase vent.

Lots of short trips? PCV valve free and working? You should be able to hear and feel the check valve moving freely. or you can just replace it, vatozone has USA made metal replacements for not a lot of money. Yeah, a USA made part at autozone, I was surprised too.

Thanks... I picked up a new PCV Valve f/Autozone and the fittings were off just enough that it wouldn't work. So I cleaned the 'old' PCV Valve and reinstalled. I may try reinstalling the new part again in a few days. I was just tired of messing w/this Libby after I got it all back together.

I got my pcv valve at napa, dirt cheap & havent had a problem for 40k miles.

I had the head gasket blow in my KJ at 22k mi. ... talk about catastophic! basically they had to replace everything, head, the block cracked, it even caused damage to the tranny. They gave me a new engine & tranny, not bad for $100 deductible on the warranty. Even though I was without the jeep for a whole month.

Not a single problem since, even with a 3" lift & 32" tires.

Additional Follow-up:
*********************************

After driving the KJ around another week or so... it seems to be running great. A couple days ago I ran a compression test on the engine (Operating Temp, Plugs all pulled, Fuel Pump Relay removed) and the Compression was good. Highest on the #6 Cylinder ~ 185 psi and gradually less on each cylinder until the lowest was the #1 Cylinder ~ 175 psi. Dropped about 1-2psi each cylinder. I also ran about 1/2 bottle Seafoam thru the brake booster line into the intake minifold. Let it sit about 15 minutes and dumped the rest of the Seafoam into the gas tank. Upon starting up the KJ it sputtered and missed... but upon giving it some gas it rolled the smoke out the tailpipe as to be expected. I took it for a short drive and got her up to speeds of ~ 65mph... after about 1/2 a mile it evened out and ran like new.

When I got home I pulled the engine codes and got the same P0306 and also a new one P0113. I think this is the Air Intake Temp Sensor f/what I could find. Not sure where that sensor is or how to check it. Hopefully I didn't ruin a sensor w/the Seafoam. Cleared the codes and she's running fine now going on a week. The Check Engine light came back on about 3 days after doing this work and clearing it. I haven't pulled the code yet... so not sure which it is this time.

I think I'm chasing a weak or bad sensor. I don't think anything inside the engine is letting go based on the strong compression test/results. It could be any of the O2 Sensors as those haven't been changed since new (KJ pushing 124K miles) but I don't want to throw money at it if I don't know for sure what it is.

Any other suggestions to try? Sensors that go out? I wasn't getting much help on LostKJ message forums. Thanks for the help/suggestions.
