Why do things all ways crap out at the worst times

I wasn't watching my gas gauge and ran out of gas driving home in the blowing snow storm. No big deal right? I put a couple of gallons of gas in it and it won't start. It cranks like mad and had 50psi fuel pressure. Finally it fires up like nothing ever happened. It wouldn't start with ether.

Apparently my CPS took a crap at exactly the same time I ran out of gas. It is either CPS or my ignition switch.

So far, if it try long enough it will fire up. I can't say how much I love doing a CPS in a blowing snow storm.

ya i was eating away at my cps...had to un/re plug all the time just to get it to started....
finally crapped out....so i would change it out soon!
so far advanced has best price in springs

That sucks Tom.

Man, some bad XJ engine mojo going around recently....... FrankZ, DanielZ and now Tom..... bad things generally happen in 3's right? Maybe things will settle down now...... :looney:

I'm curious why you would fault a solid state device over a wear part, but you are the hoss for electrical diagnostics.

That aside, I'd like to know why it snows like crazy while I'm outside wrenchin on my junk, and the snow stops when I come in to warm up???

Am I correct to assume that no one has the high altitude CPS other than the dealer? Any idea how much they run at the dealer? I have a spare CPS in my parts cache under the back seat, but it is the low altitude unit. I pulled it off the motor before I built the stroker 70,000 miles ago. I guess I can't gripe too much.

Tom,
Here's some part numbers. I've never tried to actually obtain any of them, but maybe they will help.

Renix Crank Position Sensor Part Numbers:

Standard Ignition Parts
PC87 Standard
PC307 High Altitude

Niehoff
SN4118 High Altitude
WA1611 Standard

Wells
SU3015 Standard
SU3014 High Altitude

Fred

Thanks Fred. Why don't you see if that can be put in the stickies area.

Swapped out the cps and got it running. Wierd coincidence.

Had to drop the engine and tcase skids to get to the cps. Went at it with a 4 foot extension and an air ratchet. Getting it out is the easy part. In order to reach up and start the top bolt. I ended up dropping the front drive shaft.

Did I say how much I hate swapping a CPS in a snow storm????? I'm getting too old for this crap.

One of these days when I get my 88 XJ like I want it...I plan on towing it to Colorado and going wheeling.

Will I have trouble with the cps as the rig is a Texas one....not high altitude?
No mountains here LOL.

You shouldn't have any troubles. The high altitude sensor just gives us a bit more power up here. And as for mountains, ever gone over to Alpine? Surprisingly enough, they hit above 5,000 feet.

High altitude CPS Mopar part #53005421 I can get you for $30.00 plus tax.

Have been thinking I need to pick up a CPS and keep it in the Jeep for when mine goes out. Is the high altitude worth the swap for the power difference and keep the old one as a spare?

I noticed a small bump in power, but mpg was best thing.

HOLY REVIVED THREADS, BATMAN!!!!!!!!!!!

I just installed a high altitude CPS from NAPA. It was the Echlin CSS637, cost just under $55.

Carquest listed one, #71-4977. None of those to be had in Colorado.

I wish I'd jumped at the 2009 price Putzer quoted.

Ya flores where? Used a spare i had laying around on this xj. Wanna pick one of them high alt. Ones up.
