Who needs lockers to wheel anyhow?

I owned 1 locked vehicle before that I actually took wheeling so I know the difference between locked and open. I run a stock lsd now, however I have a locker in my 8.8 about to go in. For me it is not even about needing the extra traction that much. My stock LSD has worked well in the trails here but I am tired of having to go full throttle over obstacles I could idle over with a locker. Too many close calls of bouncing off things and either almost hitting a tree or worrying about blowing somethign up due to high throttle wheel hop. I am a worrier and don't like going balls out over things in the middle of nowhere.

Are you saying that you have broken more things with open diffs than with locked ones??? :gee:

yep

doing easier trails too. i need to embrace the fun pedal much more often to get by and it doesnt always pay off. keep in mind my old locked axles were 3/4 tons

I had a truck locked front and rear and now have an open/open XJ. There are trails I never figured I could make but the XJ does it. I will say, I'm having more fun at this stage wheeling now. I think running open/open has helped hone my driving skills. I now pay more attention to tire placement, throttle and brake application.

My 01 xj has ARBs front and rear but we haven't taken it out wheeling yet, so i can't say i've ever had experience with a locker.

I'm confused... you built your 89 (obviously to wheel I imagine), but you also have an '01 with ARB's front and rear that you haven't wheeled? And you're wondering if/why you might need lockers? Um... why not just swap the ARB's into the '89 and call it good? Then there's never a question, and when you need them, you flip the switch.

BTW, I wheeled Moab for quite awhile on 31's and 3" of lift open/open and rarely had problems. That's the advantage of slickrock. Good driving skills, tire placement, and the right lines will take you all over down there. BUT, join the IC chapter on a run up Providence canyon in the snow (like last saturday) and see just how far your open/open setup gets you; http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1014984.

THE NEED FOR LOCKERS IS DETERMINED BY THE TYPE OF WHEELING YOU WANT TO BE CAPABLE OF DOING. PERIOD.

I had my first ZJ with a rear Aussie and 410's it was only 4.5" with short arms and it went everywhere I wanted it to. I didn't have any armor so I didn't take it everywhere.

ZJ's just make everything look easy, lol

A ZJ+ open diffs+ a good driver = making a locked XJ driven by a guy who isn't as good of a driver looks stupid! :D

Its about Testicular Fortitude. The driver helps though.

I'm still on the fence about lockers as well. It would be nice to at least have the rear locked. I feel its really nice to have one if you choose a bad line and the rig loads up on one side and other such things. But as a necessity, I don't see it yet.

There was one trail behind where I was living that I could not climb open. Welded the diff and it climbed right up.

This^

all of this "I'm to good for lockers" crap just means you haven't been wheeling yet.
Lockers get you places open/open won't.
Lockers prevent uneeded body damage.
Lockers prevent undue vehicle stess from excessive use of throttle.

The driver does matter... but better equipment with the same driver does too.

Ive wheeled many places without a locker, and with. Locker just makes things that are usually frustrating a lot easier. Also helps to avoid the momentum feature of wheeling, good if your trail rig is also the one that gets you to work.

I can bring my XJ with a 2" BB, locker and decent 235's places that my buddies with much bigger truck have troubles without lockers. It makes a huge difference for a lot of things. Terrain around here just isnt worth a big truck, a lot more is a challenge for me with small lift and stock sized tires

If you skip all the obstacles are you really doing the trail though?

I can race a marathon...as long as I'm riding a bike. :D

I beg your pardon. The only obsticle he skipped was tipover, mainly because it was his first time wheeling... ever haha.

I do need to clear that situation up.... We just bought the 01 as is w/ARB's stuffed in a LP30 and a D35........ I don't trust that D35 with the 35's on my 89, especially locked! Wasn't my choice the PO was an idiot but hey the price was right and it was a limited too so we got it. (funny side note, he was selling it because he was way too upside down in it haha. When we paid him he litterally wwalked across the bank and put it all into the loans he had on this xj. Feel sorry for the guy... But it was our gain)

Also i do need to join the IC chapter bad so i can get out and wheel more! We are planning on going up providence canyon soon with my group of friends. Thanks for the link.

I never said i was too good for lockers, it's just i haven't really been on terrain where i need one i suppose... I was feeling weird doing something i had always thought impossible without lockers. I'm not saying i'm some awesome driver that could get a miata though any trail anywhere. lol Just that my experience so far has been slickrock where traction is as free as candy on halloween. (this limmitation is in part due to the total lack of peple to wheel with, i'm a strong beleiver in wheeling in at least pairs, but i for sure want to get going on some trails with the naxja guys and expand my horizons AND wheeling partners!) :D

Ah, makes much more sense now. :D

You're welcome for the link. The Prov run will make you think hard about lockers. Trust me. That run 2 yrs ago is what did it for XJBANKER. Got himself some ARB's after that.

You should post up about when you're going. You might get some takers and meet new peeps.

Fo Sho! Where would i post that exactly? haha if you don't mind

Come back and talk about not needing lockers once you've wheeled the trails in BFE, or go run Pritchett...you might change your mind then :D

But I wouldn't advise even remotely attempting those trails without being locked F&R on 35's...

x2, I ran pritchet with 4.5" lift, and only 31's...it was a good thing I had some built rigs with to drag me over some stuff

He skipped the easiest obstacle on the trail, but did escalator, hells gate, and the hot tubs?

We didn't take the overlook trail, but he did one of he hot tubs. I didn't feel comfortable taking them on the overlook stuff because i was the only one there that knew what to do if something happened and we weren't equiped for if something did happen. He's still learning how to wrench and it was only the two of us. If i had another built rig with us i would've felt better about it but like i said, it was me and 5 of my friends who it was their first trail ever driving/riding.

Just about any vehicle with 4 wheel drive can walk through Hells Revenge, it's not difficult if you skip all of the obstacles.
