Who has swapped a rear hatch

A buddy called and asked about removing the rear hatch. Is there a disconnect somewhere close to the hinge, either in the body side or the hatch side? His is an 84 and he said that all but one of the wires in the flex section between the hatch and body were broken due to metal fatigue.

How did you guys handle disconnecting the wiring?

I did it Yesterday. On the older ones before 96 there are two spots on the top. The one on the right is for the washer fluid. When you get the plug out it disconects right behind the plug. On the left is the wiring harness it goes through the plug and then down the body about 3 feet. Behind the plastic panel next to the Gas filler hump is an electrical conection. The hatch wires are the 4 smaller conections. Attach a wire to fish the wires back down before you pull the wires out. Undo the hinge nuts and lift the hatch off. Reverse to assemble.
