i'm also looking to be able to keep things in the back... Mt Bike... coolers, camping gear....

should I get a rack and mount it up top?

If i have it on the back and take it off roading (after my conversion) will i have to worry about catching it when coming off a rock?

With 38.5" x 14" sx's there is not a good way to carry a spare - some extra boot materials, glue, wire and some spare valve stems I all I use...

That said - after leaving radial land I have never had a side wall flat with either boggers or SX's in the last 6 years - OBA solves the de-beading issues (only the boggers had a problem)

spare tire storage

I have my 32 spare lying flat in the rear cargo area.

I took a pc of 3/8 ply wood and cut to fit the floor area, then cut 4 pcs of 2x4's about 1" taller than my spare when lying flat. I then made a top shelf using another pc of plywood. using L brackets to hold the bottom of the 2x4 to the floorboard and just nailed the top shelf to the 2 "posts"

I have 2 tool boxes, cargo crate, hi-lift all mounted to the top shelf. Installed eyelets to the topshelf and using bungie cords or other quick tie downs to secure all items on top. facing the rear cargo area the left side is tight with the shelf set up, the right side has enough room for a cooler to sit on a 4" tall or so small ledge I threw together.

I have carried camping gear, etc. Just not good for groceries.

I'm probably going to be proved wrong in my statement: I do not like carrying a spare, or much of anything, on my roof for fear of raising my center of gravity to much. I now run 33x12.50 BFG MT's on 15x8 steel rims, I don't know what they weigh, but they aren'y light, and there's no way I am a)going to put that much weight up that high, and b) no way I am physiclly going to chuck a tire like that up and onto a roof rack.

I used to have my 31's on stock steel rims, and I used to have the spare up on the roof on my old roof rack. Maybe I'm nuts, but I swear I could feel the diffrence both on the trail, and on pavement, with it tossed up there. Granted, back in the day I also ran no swaybars half the time.

A week ago I went on a simple wheeling adventure, w/o my spare. Tore a 3" gash in one of my BFG's, plugged it with a shop rag, sheetmetal screws and 1 can of that fix-a-flat. Kept topping it off with air from my OBA, and limped home for 10 miles on logging roads, and 20 on pavement. Travel with no spare, never again.

So in short, my opinion is to either make it fit on the OEM holder thingy inside (which you are trying to get away from), or put it on a rear swing out type setup. On the latter, I don't see a 31" being a problem. Hanging up depends on how the tires mounted, I've seen a few designs, and frankly some of them really were lame. Now if you don't wheel, or don't wheel alot (with off-camber situations, they are what scare me with a spare on top), I suppose you can make an arguement for on the roof. But personally, I don't like it up there.

It's a bit long, but there's my opinion.

I now have it on the roof but, after getting a flat this winter and having to wrestle it down, I will definately be including a swing out when I build my rear bumper.

In your case why dont you just fit a 33" in flat in the stock location? You have the OBA to inflate it when you need to anyway! I hated having to swing open the swing a way every time I needed something from the rear and now with my ARB fridge mounted there when off touring it would be even worse!

I have a mad idea that I have not fully looked into yet but sounds good while still sitting in front of the computer :sunshine:
I am thinking of running 265x75x16's next which are 32.5" tall. Now the 235x85x16's are the same hieght so just thought if it would be possible to sit it hard against the back of the seat on the same angle with even a section sunk into the floor? Go as low as possible to keep rear vision and COG low. Not sure if the shock cross member will be in the way though as I have not done any measurments. You would fit a curved indent into the floor to follow the shape of the tyre.
Anyone think it maybe possible. There is no point using a wide tyre when it is the height that it the most important for emergencies!

Just a thought and putting it up as an idea and not to be attacked for not thinking it through!

On the roof. The surco rack holds it real nice, plus i have a homebrew spare tire rack holder (for lack of a better word). i bought an aluminum threshold and some carriage bolts (painted with rust-oleum). used some plastic spacers and it hold like a champ...no rattles.

as for getting it up there...i never had the problem of lifting a 31" onto the roof. being 6' 6" kinda helps too... i dont even have to stand on the jeep. (heh heh).

Very good idea! Obviously I've never though of that, but I like the idea. I'll need to give that a try!
You have a good point about the swingout too, I have a lot of equipment I carry in the rear, so the swing out might become a real pain. Thank you! :D

Here's what I did...I'm old (50)...short...and have no interest in lifting a 12.5 x 33 onto the roof rack...I never carry more than one passenger...so I took out the back seat, built a rack from 1" 11 gauge sq. tube...the tire fits under the rack...easily slides in and out...used expanded metal for the top of the rack...out of line of sight for the rear window...in the area where the rear seat base was...hinged storage/mount for hilift, etc.

If you are looking for a cheep way to mount your spare on the back go to a yard and get a spare tire carier from an up-country model. Just rember to get the plate that is spot welded to the frame inside the rear quarter panel. This will require a drill and torx and drill bits but mine works great. you may have to get longer lugs pressed in i just drilled them out and used bolts and it works fine. All in all, it cost 13 bucks :)
Do you have pix of it? I've never seen one on an upcountry model.
