I am looking for a car / Jeep trailer and besides craigslist and recycler, where else used or better yet New should I be looking for a lower cost basic trailer, in So Cali?

Or anyone have one for sale?

I so far have Carson and Big tex, Both are about 1870 metal two rail - 1700 full wood decking. But where else?

I picked up a new 16ft open car hauler from AZTEX in Fontuckey for $1495.00 out the door, 10% discount if you pay cash. I use the crap out of it & so far it's been a great trailer to me. They run adds in the recycler & list specials of the month.

Thanks! I just called and todays price is 1295 + DMV, doc, and tax = 1475$ total I might have to do that.

Do they have tie down points on the bed or around the outside parimeter?

Tie down points are the weak area of this trailer, it does have a bunch stake pockets all around it but for the money I didn't complain. I just bought some on weld on D rings & problem fixed.

umm they have the open center 2 rail style in the needed 83" clear width for 1640 out the door, and that opens up alot of tie down points and options to make boxes or racks with

Yea the 16fter is tight, I have enough room to put two small quads up front & a bunch of crap under the Jeep but that's about it. I had put 3/4 plywood down the open center section but will replace it with diamond plate one day.

I have spare rim just needs a tire if you want it, goofy 5 on 4.75 lug patten..

Make sure it has brakes, some of the cheaper ones don't. Also, if you get the light duty axles you can have problems both with the axle bending and the bearings not lasting. I know guys who have experinced both. It should at least have brakes on one axle and be six lug. Really, you get what you pay for in a trailer, but I realize we all work with limited funds. My trailer is a solid flat floor, which I really like since it's very easy to through things on the floor under the Jeep, it has tie downs all the way around, six lug axles, brakes on both axles, spare tire and mount, and a tool box in front. It was more than $2000, but in the long run easily worth it.

Richard has a very good point.
You will need brakes. Believe it or not a Cherokee can tow a Cherokee on a trailer if there are brakes.
And about the money.....this is where saving money may hurt you in the long run. It is very easy to modify a trailer to suit your exact needs, so having one with all the bells and whistles is not necessary but having one with the right axles and ability to stop it counts.
I know its kinda tough to fork out several hundred dollars extra, but if you do, you will have a foundation to do many different tasks with your trailer...
ask me how I know!

;)

so you seriously think I need 6 lug axles? Ouch. I never even seen one with 6 lugs. Not that I have seen many car trailers to start with, or that I always take note of lug count. But every trailer my jeep has ever been on or a buddies jeep has been on are all 5 lug.

As for brakes. I would not take a trailer that doesnt have at least one axle of elect brakes.

For that 1643 total its for:
2 - 3500# Axles
1 - Axle Electric Brakes
DOT Lighting

15" Wheels & Tires
Ramps & Storage

Break Away Switch
2-5/16" Coupler
Beaver Tail
Wrap Tongue

I would guess I need to add a back up battery? and a spare.

But for a no body XJ (what 3400lbs?) and basic gear, I would think that 7000 in axle rating would be suff?

Hmmmmm...I'd need to check my axels on my big trailer, but I'm thinking they are also five lug. The specs you have listed sound to be a great starting point.

Rick

Just checked....even my 24' enclosed Carson Racer has five lugs, and four wheel brakes..

Robert if you want to come by & look at my trailer before driving to Fontuckey your more than welcome too. Like I said before I have had it for over a year with about 15+ trips on it & not an issue other than a flat tire coming home from JV.

Well I really think I am going to see if I can sell a set of rims and tires I have and just get a new trailer over the used one I currently can afford. I will just get the one from aztex if I do go new I think. MAYBE up for the 2 axle elect brakes. But nothing really more.

why is that a Killer deal? for 475$ more you get a new one registered and ready to go? Just no rear gate, which I found to be a pita on my buddys. it forces you to have to have too much tongue wieght with a XJ if pulled on hood first it seemed.

But that is 475$ more...
