Wheeling in SD

Brad posted a message about wheeling at Natural bridge so I thought I would do the same for South Dakota. Years ago there was some interest in NAXJA doing a run in SD, but nothing ever came of it. I did try to contact people in SD about it and the only good thing I can say about it is it was frustrating! I did get some maps but the NFS was not willing to point out any places that off road driving was allowed. Basically they said that if the group was over a certain amount a permit would be needed and a plan of the event, and clean up submitted. They also said that any permits that were submitted would be rejected! Then I asked how many people would require a permit and we would limit attendance to under that amount. He said they really prefered that we would not do that as they want people to work with them, so applying for the permit would be preferable but the permit would be denied. Didn't make much sense to me at the time either.

I tryed to contact the local club there, the ones that run the Dakota Challenge. They were not willing to help either. Their fear was that the more people who knew about the trails the more use they would see. The more use they saw the more likely for the NFS was to shut them down, so they wouldn't help. With the attitude of the local FS I really didn't blame them.

My last call went the Jeep Jamboree to see if they could help out with any info. All they wanted to do was have NAXJA affiliate themselves with JJ. Without doing that they would not provide any info! Their not all about money, right.

So I gave up on it. Here we are many years later and I'm hoping that with the size of NAXJA, and the collective amount of wheeling we have all done that someone knows where the trails are there. I know the MWC would like to branch out and have events in more areas of the country and one of my absolute favorite states is SD so I think an event there would be great. Plus the way I hear it there are some pretty radical trails there.

So, anyone have any info on wheeling in SD?

You didn't just say that, did you?

Guess we should all just go hit orange trail

I only know 1 person that's wheeled up there, and have seen (and drooled over) countless pics of insane trails. It's a haul for me, but I'm heading up there one of these days.

Why not. SD is awesome! Beautifull scenery, lots to do and see there. SD is included in the MWC. It fits the bill of making it possible for people from outside of the MWC to come to a MW event, etc etc. Did I mention SD is awesome?

The only question would be why not? If I can get some idea where the trails are I would love to do a fact finding trip.

isn't most of the attraction of SD, on the far western part of the state? That's a long haul.

Yep, and so?

Yes it is definitely on the fringes of the MWC but there is good hard core wheeling there so it shouldn't be over looked. Plus as a group the MWC is looking for places to have events other than WF.

Bloose, i was out that way a few weeks ago. Beautiful country...although the Rangers etc were also tight lipped i did find one ranger who was willing to turn me on to a primative road leading to some fantastic camping/scenery. This was not technical wheeling by any means but it was what i was looking for on this trip.

Here's a thread about SD i found shortly before i went out, Weasel sounds like the guy you want to speak with.

I posted this up quite a few years ago,
If I remember right, Hinkelberry was on one of these runs.
There was alot of chatter but no action.
I have done a little research and there is AOLT of wheeling to be done out there!

With Lar working vacation time is scarce right now.
But we would definetly be up for a trip!

Actually SD is a way cool place to wheel. Depending on when you guys go I might meet you up there. I love the place. I have a few contacts up there and are friendly to jeepers. A good camping place right in the black hills and might even get us someone to show us the good trails.

The trails are creek bottoms and have lots of good rock. Very pretty to look at and can be very hard wheeling. There is usually some type of water around to make things interesting.

Now the area was closed this summer due to severe drought but hopefully that won't continue. When were you all thinking of going? (No I didn't read the thread)

It's open, only closed one year due to fire danger. The pics posted are from Hal Johns, fun trail, you can make it as hard as you want and then there's trails that are a couple notches above. I should be around anytime you guys want to come out. If by chance I'm not I can hook you up with a couple other people that will show you around, so either way.

And yeah right after the trails open there can be water from spring runoff. 2-4 feet in some spots.

Mark,

I've been in contact with Weasel and I am planning to make something happens when the trails open in spring. I think Weasel said some time in March. Too much going on to do it before the end of the year so it will have to wait till March for me. I'm definitley planning to go there though.

Camping in Custer State Park is really nice and resonably priced. Nice big pull in sites to boot. But you must book well in advance.

I'm thinking of trying to make a few 4-5 day weekend trips out there in spring to early summer. It's about 12-13 hours for me but I think a few 4 day weekends would yield more information on wheeling spots than one 9 day trip. I would have to do 2 days of driving and 2 days of wheeling. I hope like heck diesel is under $3 a gallon by then.

This is what I am thinking right now. I can adjust that to whatever I need to as long as I can plan in advance. Do you have any suggestions?

There are private camp sites that might be more jeeper friendly. CSP might not be the best place to work on junk if needed.

I forget the name of the place right now but I'll ask Jim and let you know. It is right in the middle of where lots of the trails are. Not real expencive either.
