wheeling books?

i'm going to pick up the "XJ builders guide" book but would like some other useful books to consider as well. maybe some along the lines of recovery tactics and offroad 4wd driving techniques.

any in particular that you would recommend?

Tread lightly and Jeep Jamboree USA both have small off-road driving books that are pretty good. The one from Jeep Jamboree USA is written by Mark A. Smith, and he definately knows his stuff when it comes to driving techniques and recovery.

The Jeep Owners Bible also has some good info, but much of the tech is geared toward wranglers.

The off-roading(ers) bible. Some of the stuff is "dumbed" down a little bit but there is alot of good info in there.

A lot has to do with self-recovery (desert environment, etc) but the principles and safety info is still good.

thanks for the ideas!

i was reading the reviews on that recovery book and alot of people say it is way too "technical", too much number crunching and what not, not enuf real world how too. i think i will pick it up anyway as its about the only book i have come across thats dedicated to recovery.

I have the builders guide but ive been told not to put much emphasis on what is said in that book, some of the things the say to do is "irreversable shit

I.E. Drilling a hole in track bar instead of buying a new one after installing a new lift, you mess that up you have to buy a new one anyway"

I believe BillAVista's tech section at Pirate has some military off-road tips & tricks manuals that you should probably read. Not as much number crunching (they're written for soldiers...) and military manuals read like 1950's textbooks (they're not so concerned with "presentation," just "dissemination of information" - which I like. The best textbooks were written in the 1940'a, 1950's, and early 1960's anyhow.)
