My cousin has a decent set of mudders on a nice pair of rims but the pattern is 5x5.5. I have an xj, so i would have to get adapters to go to 5x4.5....

I've heard that 1. this is never a good idea because it puts alot of stress on the wheels and axle and 2. i have the dana 35 which is a weak axle already.

What would you guys recommend? look elsewhere or buy the adapters? I wouldn't be doing any hard offroading on these. I just need some decent tires to get through the summer before i can put some meaty tires on her for the winter.

Buy yourself some nice Cragar Steelies to put the wheels on.

Adapters sell new for $100 shipped per pair, and sell used for around $80 shipped per pair. Buy them and run the tires. When you change again later, sell them to recoup some of the cost.

It would more or less put stress on your front unit bearings. I suppose it could affect your rear wheel bearings too but nothing else, I don't see it putting extra stress on the axles...

But why don't you just have the tires swapped to your current wheels or buy some new wheels?

Alot of the wheel adapters are cheap and dangerous. SpiderTrax are good but really expensive. You could get a set of Cragar Soft 8 steel wheels for much less than a set of SpiderTrax wheel adapters/spacers.
