What year was the D44?

Hey all just wondering what years the D44 were offered in? And yes I did search but all I could find out is that they were offered in '87 and other years but they did not say. I might be getting a '89 XJ 4dr. Auto, and was wondering if this axle was offered then?

"Now for the famous Dana 44 non c-clip - 30 spline, 1.31" diameter shafts, 8.5" ring gear, 2.75" axle tube. It was available from 87-89 on various versions of XJ's, mainly ones with tow packages. They seem to be much more common on the 89's than other years."

quoted from old_man's sticky thread about gearing and axles. check to see if it came with the towing package. my '88 had the D44 with the towing package, 4.0 and auto.

Heck, you didn't even have to search to find this one

Before you ask a gearing question - look here

Next time read the sticky's

Just remember, just because it has a hitch, does not mean that it has a D-44 under it. My '88 limited has a hitch, but came with a D-35. Still trying to figure that one out, but, then again, this one XJ has been the biggest POS that I have owned yet, but somehow, it is the best looking one out of all eleven (11) jeeps that I own. ( somehow, that is not as big a surprise as I thought it should be- probably because it hardly ever MOVES.)

My observations...

'87 was slightly rare, mostly found in XJ's with a 4.0 and the towing package. Every '87 XJ Wagoneer I've seen in a yard had a 44 but they also had tow packages.

I have never seen a 44 in any other year XJ. I would imagine that there may be some in early 1988 models though just from overstock.

I'd say there is about a 99.9% chance you have the ultra strong Dana 35 non C-Clip in the '89.

just bought a d44 out of florida on ebay, the guy i bought it from said most 87s and 88s have them in them down there. Something about most florda xj's having most or all factory options. I fuke in Jeep shipping maybe. If you live in Florida, let us know if this is correct.

Most likly it will have a Dana 35. 87 and 88 XJ cherokees had 44 with tow package. Some MJ truck also came with 44 with a metric ton package.

87 seems to be the target year, all 4 87 i've owned had the 44. 2 with factory hitch and wiring harness. 2 with just the hitch and no wiring. i can confirm one 88 model i found with a 44 and no hitch at the time i saw it.

Also a lot of 2 door 87 and 88 came with a 44. So far all of the 2 door xj's around town have 44's. I'm waiting to see one on sale so I can buy it.
