Warn. Because you get what you pay for and if you are truly building an adventure rig, do you want your winch letting you down if you are by yourself in the middle of nowhere?

Ramsy, Smittybuilt, Superlift and all the others might be ok for a rig that needs to be winched up a trail or used in a recovery of another vehicle when there are usually other rigs around with winches that could step in if yours breaks but if you are really out for adventure, this may not be the case.

Thats what i was thinking and i have gotten some feed back on what kind. So far the 9000 or m8000 but i dont know what way to go. what do you guys think for an adventure rig?

Some bumpers, like ARB wont allow an integrated winch... just something to keep in mind.

I have a Warn X8000i that has never let me down in better than a decade.

i have been talking to AJ'S and they can make a bumper to fit whatever winch your going to buy as long as you tell the what it is.

What kind of stuff have you been stuck in and how much gear to you haul with you?

I try very very very hard not to get stuck. It vary rarely happens.

In the last year, this was my only stuck where my winch was required.

As far as gear? That is a long list and depends on the trip and how long I plan to stay. Right now in my jeep I carry the following all the time...without exception.

A Viair 450C onboard air system with a two gallon tank.(permanently mounted)
A full set of Metric and SAE wrenches.
A full socket set.
Various other tools.
An ARB Fridge.
A transmission funnel.
Spare driveshaft that works for both front and rear.
A set of inner and outer axleshafts for the front. Left and right side.

On the roof I have a Pelican gun case mounted permanently to the roof rack which holds...

Two tow straps.
One tree saver strap.
Winch controller
A case of electrical connectors and various parts to repair my OBA system
An extra two D rings
A snatch block
and a multi meter.

I keep a 5 gallon Jerry can and a high lift on the back bumper.

Then I have my trailer for camping trips where all of my various camp gear goes in, two more Jerry cans and my roof tent.

Im sure there are a few things I forgot that gets stuffed into this corner or that but for the most part, that is what I keep in the Jeep.

Make sure your electrical system is in good shape. At least 100 amp alternator, a good battery, and really good cables.

Don't even consider running a winch on a standard battery you won't have the power for long pulls. Get the 9000 its allways better to have the extra grunt. But make sure the rest of your gear is rated for twice the winch pull so if you need to run double line you can. Personally I have a smittybuilt 8000 and am very happy with it. At least 50 pulls and no failures at all but I'm also almost never alone. Biggest pull has been a ford 450 and horse trailer in sand so its quite capable. The warns are beasts I had a 9000 on my Yj

thanks for all this guys. I think i am going to do the 9000 because i would rather have more than not enough.

ranger you said run a 100 amp alternator do you have a write up on this?

I also want to run 2 batteries does anyone know where a write up is for that. I have looked but cant find anything? My searching skills lack.

The most popular alternator mod is just to grab a 136amp V8 ZJ alternator from a junk yard. Nearly bolt in.
