What was your biggest mod mistake

RUSTYS STEERING CONVERSION ...THE DUMMEST THING I HAVE EVER DONE

It sucked after 2 days of driving. There was so much play(up and down) in cross joint (betwwen drag and tie rod links) so I literally had to fight steering wheel in order to drive straight!
PPut back stock steer syst with drop pitman arm.....Magically everything was back to normal.

And all this time I thought that I was the only guy with major regrets/ mistakes.

As Beezil most eloquently said, it could take up too much f' ing space, but here are a few.

Using AAL's on my first lift....can you say shot springs?

Selling my MJ....:banghead:

Buying Pro-Crap shocks..... Rough Country's ride better!

Using expandable foam in the framerails to quiet the ride....I must have really been on crack that day....now water collects there :anon:

And my biggest mistake is......drumroll please.....

Buying parts for the Jeep with the thought that I would NEVER want to go higher than ___ " Lift and ____" Tires (fill in the blanks.

John

PS When checking to see if something is dragging under your Jeep, ALWAYS check to see if you have all 4 tires:D :D :D

I haven't done anything to my 98 XJ yet . . . but this thread is damn great.

It's helping me with my planning and in some cases the unplanning.

Thanks y'all.

OK...so this is real soul cleansing time huh??

Allow me to regain my place as King Idiot, these will make you ALL feel better.

-Not covering the windshield, seat, conslole when welding in the cage.
-Not listening to EVERYONE, and buying a 120 welder instead of waiting for a 220.
-Running my brand new synth. winch line around the support bar on the winch before exiting thru the fairlead, and using it a year like that (no wonder I could not get it to free spool the line out) Thankfully I found this one BEFORE Attica this last weekend.

and number 1......
-Mounting a tow hook to the stock rear bumper with 1 bolt and using a piece of 1x3/16th strap from the fram to the other bolt. I realized the error of my ways when I launched the hook THRU the windshield FRAME of my buddies CJ-7 and into the passangers lap. No injuries.

oh yea i thought of another one...

[Rant] tried to take the doors off....what a mess...whoever at DC thought it was a good idea to use torx bolts in the hinges was a fool...ended up grinding the heads off most of them to get the door off.....

then i couldn't get the hinge pin out..tried torch, drilling, etc etc...i'm sure it can be done...but after a week of trying every second of the day i got p*ssed and said forget it...

there's still more...

put the door's back on...with no shimms and not in the proper location...bent the front quarter panel on the driver side closing and opening the door.....fixed it so it doesn't rub....but now the door hangs funny and when it snows it comes in the door...so does rain and in water...forget it!!!!!!!!!! stupid doors
[/Rant]

yep, been there too!

This one looks like a winner to me,

My biggest mistake was buying the junk in my sig and replacing just about everything, then buying the Tornado shit, maxing my credit cards(rebuild engine, swap axles, tranny, TC, doors) and being in debt.

Oh, SURE, wait til the day AFTER I melted my visa at AJ's and Quadratech to mention that.. If they cancel the rubicon event, I'll be the guy wandering in the desert, mumbling about rock rails and wilderness bumpers...

Matt

I, like Matt, have rarely made a mod that I've eventually come to regret...........unless you want to count the 3:07-3:73-4:10-4:56 gearing evolution........buying an XJ with a 5 speed.......installing the gas tank skid a month AFTER I took a boulder in the tank........gonna stop now. :D

One more for wastin money on RK Lift. And spenden money on my d30 and chr8.25. And Driving in to the garage door woith the hood open.

Damn Jeff, you used to be my hero!

Well, at least I have your bumper as one of the best mods I've done.

Actually, as much as I enjoy my AX-15's, the stupidest thing I ever did (so far) was related to a tranny. Not exactly a mod - but still incredibly dumb. When the B/A 10 on my first XJ gave out at 160K, I (. . . drumroll . . .) replaced it with another B/A 10! Only cost me $2000 for parts and labor.

Hey, what the hell did I know - this was pre-NAXJA days. I just wanted my precious Pioneer running again.

Just remember though - as Scotty says, "Slushboxes are for wimps!"

Me too with the doors.
And also destroyed a windshield welding on my roofrack.
Not using friction modifier in a used Auburn.
Regearing at 4.10's
Too many others to list.

I'm fairly new to modifying my Jeep so I'm sure there are more to come but my biggest mod mistake was snapping the other 3 rear shock bolts after the first one snapped. All to put on shocks from the junkyard.

Hmmm....... dumbest? Probably that, and definitely the most expensive....

Bought a second XJ when I discovered the floor pan in my 94 has holes (patches 24x30 inches in the footwells.) Discovered afterwards that the second one had worse issues towards the rear. That is turning out to be an EXPENSIVE mistake, and I'm still paying for it.

A Jacobs ignition

Shudder, hack...cough - cough.

And their customer service sucked - you could never get someone live, and when you left a message they never called back.

Here's how my call went (from their end):

"oh I'm sorry sir, the unit is just out of warranty......Yes sir, I can see why you might be upset.....No sir we use only the best manufacturing practices.....No sir we stand behind our product......I'll tell you what sir, to make it up to you, we'll sell you a brand new unit for half price......SIR! My mother and her love life have nothing to do with this conversation, nor do I need an anatomy lesson."

If I ever see "Dr Jacobs" on the street, I'm going to upgrade his electrical system with a stun gun.

OKay..I'll play

Worst Mod: My Rancho 5000's. I don't mind the shocks themselves, but they run too much on the short side. Good for a 3" lift my ass, I have a 3" lift and I've got a whole quarter of an inch of droop in the rear end.

Do I get extra credit that it took bonehead me over a year and a half to come to my senses and realize this?

Most Boneheaded thing: Filling the crankcase with six quarts of fresh, new Valvoline full synth, only to realize ten minutes later that the drain plug was still out,! Luckily the pan was under it, at least I didn't make a mess!
