Yeah, I tore into mine a few days ago and found the same thing. I am thinking about doing a few short videos about the repair and the rebuild of my XJ. I have to get it ready for it's 30th birthday.
On that cutup body what is around the opening on the filler tube> I broke the gas door cover and that looks like it's what I need Hard to tell from the pic
FIGURES!!! Took my 2000 for alignment. the "mechanic" at Sears said he could not align because bad tie rod ends... replaced and took back... the he said bad Ball Joints So I bought a ball Joint removal and pres tool and all 4 ball joints. Took apart this weekend and all my ball Joints are in surprisingly good shape so I'm not replacing. Oh well guess I'll have spares and the tools
Made the classic mistake of picking up the MAXCOOL version of the zj fan clutch and then for that straightened out last night. I'd like to get it back mounted tonight and the power steering pump assembled and installed. Still will need to go to the gym and mow the yard through.
Be careful out there!!! I headed into town yesterday to pick up some stuff for my drive to AZ tomorrow. On I35 my Jeep was driving weird back and forth in lane? Stopped at Oreilly's and when I came out I smelled like brakes burning... was not to worried a lot of old cars in the parking lot. Drove from there and first stop light hit brakes and jeep pulled to the left a lot. Continued and at next light pulled left more and grinding noise. Was close to a mechanic shop (only one in the town) so pulled in. Passenger front wheel and hub very hot. Looks like caliper locked up. Did not want to drive from there so left for him to check and repair. He does not know if he can even get to it today So it not looks like I'm taking the truck to the Overland Expo
Anyone had caliper lockup before... is there a warning? I had not driven the Jeep since I trailered it home from the AR rally. Guess I did something there?
Yes I've had a caliper lock up before and he sounded exactly the way you described it. Thankfully, it was happening just a little bit away from my girlfriends apartment. I let it sit for a few hours and then rebuilt the caliper. Problem solved.
Do you have time to fix it before leaving? You can just swap in a rebuilt caliper easily and quickly enough.
