Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?
transfer case and tranny-buy a junkyard replacement.
rear main seal-should be a two piece, and while it will probably be a full day project for you, it is still fairly simple. and there ARE write-ups in the OEM tech section.
the only time oil leaks are a fire hazard is if there is a BIG flame under your jeep. which i'm willing to bet is rare. tell you what: take a quart of oil, pour it out on to cement, and put as many lit matches as you want on it. It won't catch fire. trust me, i've done this myself. They are blowing smoke up your ass (pun intended.)
the most common leaks with XJs are rear main seals (as i mentioned, fairly simple), valve cover gaskets (easy fix with about $15 and an hour or so of work), and oil pan gasket (little more involved, but still simple and about an hour of labor.)
NEVER trust shops. especially when you're young or a woman. and NO offense is meant by that, I have just worked at and managed too many shops to know otherwise. Which is why I don't do it anymore.
