Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

i got mine back from the shop and well i like the fact that it cost $40 less then they quoted, but i wasnt too happy with the list of things that really need to be looked at. they quoted me about $5000 to keep it its mechanically sound so i posted it up on CL :D

But in reality how much of that was labor that you could do yourself or have a work party and get done for say... a few pizzas and a couple cases of beer with us.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

I had to replace my driver side window regulator. Just to let everyone know that the 4 door manual window regulators(out of an 95 in this case) will fit the two door(renix era in my case) models and work properly. Had to drill out the rivets in mine to remove it. Evidently the newer models had/has bolt in regulator assemblies. And I'm not talking nut and bolt style here either. I am talking the bolt screwed right into the regulator. And yes it was a factory regulator. Found that the case on the reg I pulled from a newer 2 door also a couple years ago when I pulled one for the pass side from the bone yard.

And while there I tightened up my drivers side mirror.

heres the list they gave me

rebuild transfercase - cant do my self
replace transmission - cant do myself
rear main seal - cant do myself
draglink - can do
pass front CV axle shaft - was planning on HPD30 anyways
front track bar - can do
they told me it has ALOT of oil leaks and its a fire hazard - uhh i guess i can JB weld that stuff
PS pump is almost gone. - can do
and the exhaust is barely hanging on - and that i prefer to do myself

the first three are gunna be a bitch and i'd much rather sell it for 100% profit and then invest in something less jacked up.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

RMS is easier than it sounds. Just read the jeepin writeup and roll your sleeves up.

Go to a JY and buy an aw4/231 used and throw em in.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

transfer case and tranny-buy a junkyard replacement.

rear main seal-should be a two piece, and while it will probably be a full day project for you, it is still fairly simple. and there ARE write-ups in the OEM tech section.

the only time oil leaks are a fire hazard is if there is a BIG flame under your jeep. which i'm willing to bet is rare. tell you what: take a quart of oil, pour it out on to cement, and put as many lit matches as you want on it. It won't catch fire. trust me, i've done this myself. They are blowing smoke up your ass (pun intended.)

the most common leaks with XJs are rear main seals (as i mentioned, fairly simple), valve cover gaskets (easy fix with about $15 and an hour or so of work), and oil pan gasket (little more involved, but still simple and about an hour of labor.)

NEVER trust shops. especially when you're young or a woman. and NO offense is meant by that, I have just worked at and managed too many shops to know otherwise. Which is why I don't do it anymore.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

dammit Will, you beat me to it!

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

and dammit again! you stole my sig!

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

hey its a ZJ :P and thats just the mechanical crap litterally the only things that work properly in my ZJ are the passenger seat and the driver front speaker. and that may be pushing it haha

im just gunna sell it and but this MJ im looking at and find an engine to throw in it and i have my a new rig! but watch im some how gunna end up buying a toyota or something. i shouldn't be allowed to have my own money, i always spend it one useless crap.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

Rebuilding a T-case is actually not hard at all. It is just intimidating until you actually do it. However, just the parts to rebuild your case will cost you around 350-500 depending on what parts you decide to go with. Whereas you can just buy a good used case for around 150 from the salvage yard.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

Topped off engine oil.

Then measured how much I need to lift the front to match the rear. Back is at about 3.5". Front sits at about 2.25" of lift. Guess I'll just order some 3" lift springs. Ah well.

Re: What was done to YOUR rig today?

finally got my maxxiss buckshot 33s, now just need to mount them on the OEM jeep 15s i got and then figure out what is the lowest lift to get to be able to fit them under my jeep

Didn't you just put new springs in? Maybe you just need to put some ACOS in, then you could dial it in to the whatever height you needed.

Yeah. They are 2.5" lift springs but apparently they are pretty worn out. Only got maybe an 1" of lift out of them. ACOS are nice, but $$$. I'll order 3" lift springs this Friday and just call it done. Tired of messing with it.

But it was worth it for those springs still. Was able to get my JK shock on and it rides SOOOOO much better now.
