So, I've been noticing that every time I want to really use the XJ, like for a camping trip or to tow something, it's just a bit small for my needs.
I want to tow up to 7k, I think. Call it a project car on a hauler. Realistically closer to 5500, if the trailer weighs 2,000.
So, what do we like that can be had on a budget? I've been looking at the Chevy Tahoe, old body style, with the 5.7. Also thinking about the 6.2 / 6.5 diesels which I know aren't great compared to the Dmax, Cummins etc...

How much seating do you need?

Fuel economy?

Miles per year? DD or occasional hauler?

4x4 or 4x2?

Probably hard to beat an older 3/4 ton regular cab 4x2 big block, being not the desirable 4x4 crew cab diesel. Unless that is what you require.

Love my 1500 but its a 2009.

Ideally, I'd seat four people comfortably + a bunch of junk in it. 16+ mpg highway, 4wd, towing capacity 8k or better. I want to haul auto parts, and or 4 people + climbing gear _ camping gear, see out the back, have power to spare, etc. A WK at the smaller end, a 3/4 ton Suburban on the larger end. Fuel economy takes a back seat to cheap & easy repairs.
I'd DD it at least until I scraped up money for something with better fuel economy. 12K miles / year tops, though, and probably much less. I don't drive my XJ much but like I said - when I really need the XJ (vs the Corrolla my fiance rolls) I actually need something bigger.

Are Tahoes down to $5k, not clapped out?

Kind of sounds like 90s 3/4 ton Suburban to me. I don't think I would go half ton for that budget and that trailer weight.

I got my 96 F350 four door with a 460 with 180k and very clean for 3800. Replacement parts and maintenance is cheap. Mileage is about 8 towing and 12 unloaded but, I bought it just for towing the shitbox and camping trips and such.
