What the story how you got your xj/mj?

i got mine for free from my moms cousin. it had 170,000 miles on it it wasnt shifting at all (AW4) and they couldnt seem to find a mechanic who could fix it. it had been sitting for two years and they would start it every now and then. they heard i was working summers in a garage and offered it to me for free thinkign that it needed a new transmission. went to pick it up and it wouldn't stay running. trailered it home, put a rebuilt alternator, a new TPS in it, and learned to jiggle the gear selector to get it started(NSS) and had a running 88 xj for about 200 bucks. I've been adding to it ever since i got it a year ago

Got the XJ on ebay for $2200 (1994 sport in near mint condition )

I quit smoking on 1/25/05 (after 12 years) and the money saved (about $150/month) goes into a savings account to pay for my "jeep stuff"

I was searching the internet for a cheap five-speed, 4.0, 4x4 Cherokee and found one about a four hours' drive from me, down by Allentown, PA. So I drove down a few days later to check it out, and except for a tach, it had everything I wanted and nothing I didn't. 2 door, manual windows and locks, factory vinyl mats, new CD player and speakers. And even though it's a 1990, and I paid less than $1000 for it (from a dealer, no less), there's almost no rust. So I drove down again the following week with my dad, paid in cash, got thirty-day temporary tags, and drove it home. It needed a new front wheel bearing, but it's been reliable so far.

Boring story but here ya go...

Drove an XJ way back when I was in the Corps. Dogged the crap out of that puppy, running dunes hard in Yuma, in and out of the river to the sandbars and back, jumped it a lot, bent the front axle, had it welded straight, abused it a lot more, finally traded it but can't remember why. Never had a lick of problems even with the hated 2.8 V6 in it.

Fast forward a number of years. I'm divorced, living with a chick (now my wife) who has two kids, I've got custody of my three every other weekend and the Dakota pickup wasn't cutting it and was in some serious need of major work. Start hitting the lots looking for an XJ. Find plenty I liked but no one will finance me. Divorced, bankrupt, you name it. Hit a "Finance anyone lot" across the river and they've got this good looking 2WD XJ for a decent price (4500 if I remember right) and real goo trade in on the Dak. Got stupid, looked at it once, drove it once, all in the dark. Bought it. Next day discovered the drivers door was falling off, someone had obviously used it as a 4WD (lots of river grass jammed into the underneath, blackest oil I've ever seen, and so on. Figured I was screwed but didn't feel too bad as the Dakota was heavily abused and ran good on the test ride they gave it but was gonna need some serious work.

7 years later the XJ was still running great, the door was finally broken off the top hinge but worked. Let daughter number 1 drive it and she drives thru a fence and a cedar tree. Get it back and running. Let daughter number 2 drive it and now it sits in my parking spot with a blown motor. Turns out she always let Wally World change the oil and they only ever put 4 qts in. She had the poor thing for almost a year before it finally had enough tho.

Still trying to decide to rebuild or sell.

I was driving around in a red, 2 door 1995 Civic, which was the right price when I bought it and just hadn't quite succummed to my constant go-cart style abuse. I got it for $8200 at the Honda dealer in Cartersville, GA (Boomershine Honda) when I realized that even though I was drawing minimal income from my post-college tech startup, I was going to need to spend some money on a car if I wanted to get around.

A few CV joints, a new clutch and transmission, and a couple of hit&runs in my apartment parking lot weren't enough to make me move on from this ride once it was paid for, but a pretty serious break-in was. Method of entry: the plastic door handle on the driver's side was pried out and the lock fished open through the inside of the door. Stolen: my homebrew GPS/NAV/MP3 system, touchscreen and all. The good news: it was completely destroyed on the way out and furthermore, I'm sure whoever took it out couldn't reassemble the thing since they left some pretty obscure parts behind (power controller, hard disk adaptor, etc.)

A couple days of driving a car where the driver's door doesn't open ought to be enough for anyone. I'd been idly checking out Ebay for XJs for a while, and now with the need urgent, I clicked Buy It Now on a green 2000 Sport with what sounded like some wierd options. Sunroof and cloth seats? Well, no matter, it's cheap and it's all the right hardware - specifically 4.0 and 4WD (which many weren't; I was surprised at how many 2WD 4's were in places like Florida).

I had a *serious* fight with Paypal trying to get them to accept my credit card, and then they immediately sent me a customer satisfaction survey. Sigh. Filling that out was fun. Paypal is the worst shit ever, bar none. I'd use a BofA card to buy a Hummer at WalMart before I'd voluntarily give PayPal a nickle.

Picking up the XJ was a struggle; it was 4AM Halloween morning when I got started, and I was 1 truckload away from being all moved in to my new apartment in DC. That's where I woke up, fired up my rental pickup (big ol' Dodge Ram, boy would I like one of those if the V8 didn't burn gas like crazy) and returned it to the Enterprise lot in Tyson's. That's where I picked up my Civic, which I had left there when I rented the truck to move. Now mind you, it's frosted the night before/this morning, and I'm dressed to travel, not for the season. Now I'm in my second frozen, outdoor-parked car, and the four-banger ain't lighting the fires hard enough to blow much in the way of hot air out of the defroster. So it's an icy windshield all the way to Dulles; when I get there and park in the Economy lot, I decide I want to bring my VA tags with me, 'cause who knows how with-it this Ebay seller is going to be, and I'd rather drive back on slightly-mistaken plates than no plates. Off they come, into my jacket. Goodbye Honda, maybe if I'm luck I'll never have to see your beat ass again.

When I get to security, the plates go into a bin and through X-ray. I get a look from the TSA drone, but no argument.

When I get to my plane, its a little RJ dealio. Almost all of the handful of passengers are up front; my seat is 4F, and when I hear the pilot talking to the stewardess about moving some passengers around, I volunteer to move back Immediately. Little known fact: if weight is improperly distributed on an airplane, it can be impossible to lift off (you just go shooting off the end of the runway into the woods, or the river, or the warehouses, or the Highway). Or impossible to recover from an inadvertent stall (you fall to the ground fluttering like an autumn leaf).

The last seat has some comfort (you never hear of a plane backing into a mountain) but it's quite close to the twin engines. 4AM isn't a great wakeup call, so by the time I get to Cleveland, I'm glad to deboard. I called my Ebay seller and he promised to send a car - 30 minutes later I joined another Buyer in the back of a Park Avenue, heading away from teh airport. He's talking about how much he does love these Park Avenues and how he "lives" part time in Montana and he'll register it out there for Tax Purposes. Me? I'm picking up a used Cherokee and driving it back to DC... we might see Wyoming and Montana one day; I've got a buddy out there in Laramie and eventually when my new rig has 3 or 4 inches and 32" Mickey Thompsons under it, the pull of the true wilderness is going to get the better of me one vacation and I'm going to have to test this thing up Rogers Canyon Road and across the rock fields north of town up to the antenna. Maybe take it up to Six Mile Gap, or see how high I can get into the Never Summer range before the snow freaks me out.

We took ownership of our cars at a tiny office in a huge warehouse near Shaker Heights. The brakes on my truck were a little squishy, and there was no jack or spare tire, and the driver's read light cluster was totalyl nonfunctional, and the headliner was falling down, but the price was still right as far as I was concerned. Paint was good, engine ran strong. I paid $67000 and drove it back to DC that day. Got home around 9, packed the last load of stuff into it and drove to my new apartment.

Over the next few weeks I registered it, did a brake overhaul, and replaced a radiator/waterpump/coolant system because the previous owner "fix"ed a coolant leak with a can of that mud/clay shit that grinds your waterpump to death. I also added some new interior trim pieces to replace the missing ones, so the headliner isn't an issue now. I put about 8000 miles on it pretty quickly going back and forth to the Northeast, and I've got a total of nine grand into it to bring it to daily driver condition.

Of course, as I type this, my XJ is over at the body shop still bone stock, waiting for a check from Liberty Mutual. You see, some gentlemen in my new neighborhood relieved me of my ride one night while I slept. I'm not kidding, this thing was parked outside my garage exactly *one* time in it's life in my family, and that night it was stolen. Lock popped out, ignition lock module popped out and started with a screwdriver. Left on the other side of the block with 2200$ damage. Sigh... could be worse.

That's my story - more to come once I find someplace around here that's willing and able to do my lift for me, because I am not going to fuck around with compressed springs with my limited toolset and knowledge. If you know of a place around here that's reputable... hit me up.

My 88 YJ crapped out and I found a MJ/XJ set for $900 (88 MJ, now my DD, and a 91 XJ that was beat hard). Bought them both, the MJ wihtout a tranny. I then scavenged the BA 10/5 and the rims from the YJ and sent the XJ to the scrap yard (had a beat 4.0 auto combo). I blew the rear end shorty after, trying to climb a pine needle covered incline in 2wd. Bought another XJ ('93 4 popper) for $200 to scavenge the 4.10:1 gears. (MJ came with 3.08 stock) Sent that XJ to the scrap yard.

In short I have successfully "recycled" 2 XJs and a YJ to keep my MJ on the road. ( I think I did those Jeeps a favor though.)

I will sell you mine for half that.

Look, 21k is my final offer... :D

I don't know.... That is less than 1/3 of the $67000 that you paid for yours and I have alot of mods.

OK, you got a deal. Let me know when you have cash and she is yours.

Was looking aroung at junkyards for a cheap($100) beater that I could learn stick on and not care about and noticed an XJ sitting out front it was a 90 LTD guy wanted $400 and it needed a steering column and brakes, put it on hold and then it got sold so I decided what the hell I'll look for another one, went on trader and found an 89 LTD with 280,000 Kms on it for $250(cdn) went and took a look at it and its been beaten on but I think its not too bad but we'll see what the safety brings.

Had a wrangler in High school. Knew this would not cut it to make the trip to Michigan Tech (went there for a year) with all of my crap and was not looking forward to a 500 mile trip at 16mpg. I was looking for a diesel VW golf (50+mpg) when I came across this amazing 96 xj at a used car dealer I used to work at. in 2003, this 96 had 57,000mi and was in immaculate shape. Some old lady had it so I picked it up and never looked back

2 years, 40,000mi and 2in higher and I couldnt be happier, unless the xj had a diesel...

Well, I (and my cousin) bought an '86 Chief about a year ago, for like $900 (actually, it became more like $1400 when swapping it back and fourth for a couple of other 4x4's). However, I have always had an eye out for the Cherokees, and I actually knew pretty much about them, yes, I even knew they were unibody five years before I got one. :D Being satisfied with the '86 (turning more and more into a beater), we decided to buy another one - a '91 Limited, way more sophisticated, as a matter of fact, we've never paid that much for a vehicle before. But then again, we've only bought old junk.

Still pleased, nice, nimble vehicles.

The lease ran out on my wife's car.
We wanted a Jeep. Decided to get a chaep one and then get another car for her i few months.
Mt father in laws neighbor had the 92 XJ he was using to run mail in.
112,000.
the tiniest tires you've ever seen on a 4x4!!
like 195 70 r 15's

So he's asking 3k.
I said it's need paint the clearcoat is gone.
He said bout 2k.
I wrought hima check.
And he delivered it a few days later.

Long story short. I'm still driving the XJ every day.
Got to used to no payments.
Plus i need money for parts.

We had just recieved our tax money a few years ago and decided to get our first 4wd. Didn't really know what we wanted so we looked around for something cheap for sale in a front yard or something.

We stopped to look at an 85 wagoneer. Sign said $550.00. The jeep wouldn't start so the owner paid for a battery from Sears up the road. Got it running decent. I offered $500.00 and now we have a $2300.00 85 Wagoneer.

Kim.

i bought mine from a guy that bought it at a tow company auction so i had to go apply for a new title. then after $80 for taxes and licenses crap and $150 for the cherokee i trailered it home. i ran but it ran really poorly. as of now i have $350 into it including the price of the jeep. most of which is the new windsheild i had to buy

hmmmmmm.....well, my story is a little long-winded, perhaps a little boring...my first Jeep experience was when my friend and I rented a Cherokee out of Denver early in 1996. We drove to Nebraska and envrirons and it was, as far as we were concerned, perfect for our purposes.....but I never bought one new, like my Ford Ranger a year earlier (kick self once again :) ) A few years passed, and another friend said I needed a Cherokee so we could explore some mountain roads....so I started just casually looking, and I found a white 1990, 4 door aw4/4wd, 152k Laredo in June '04 for 2200.....it was a girls first car her parents bought her, and the dealership paperwork showed 2k worth of repairs, so I was essentially obtaining a "free Jeep." I bought the '90, lifted it to 3.5", installed a D44 rear axle, changed the ABS to standard brakes, and some other mods....this past Feb I found a 2wd 1992 MJ, so I bought that, as it was a 4.0/5 sp short box, optioned only with a/c, but in great condition....so perhaps I am an addict....;) I have a few more things to fix on both Jeeps, but I have found them reliable and simple to repair, even if diagnosis is a bit involved....MAJOR fun!!!!

Lemme see here ... the story on this end is really simple .... a friend of a friend deal .... bought a 96 xj sport with a hair under 138k miles on it and nothing wrong with it ...no rust nota.. for $1000 all I ve done to it is fluids plugs and wires .... and that was over a year ago.Still runs great .... time to beat on it I guess

The guy was looking at wranglers at a used car lot. He was looking to possibly trade his MJ in on one. I interupted the sale and he decided to sell to me. (guessing i was giving him more then the dealer, but i didn't care) That was on a friday. He was in a rush so we decided i would drive it on saturday. I liked it and told him i would give him the 2,000 on Monday, I agreed to get a ride to the place he worked, and when he got off work I would ride to his place and leave in the MJ..............The guy must have been an diehard jeep guy at heart, because on the way to his place he offered to let me keep the money and give me $100 dollars for my trouble...the guy was trying to back out of the sale. I don't remember how it went, but somehow I talked him into going through with the deal.

When he handed me the keys and title, He says, " i hope you don't plan on being one of those guys who jacks them up and destroys them "
