what paint you guys using to paint an AXLE

I like bedliner or rubber under coating for most things "jeep" because it's durable / cheap. Epoxy type paints are probably the overall winners for performance.
Why do you need brake fluid resistance, though? Shouldn't be leaking fergodsake and you can keep it off the painted surfaces without too much trouble when you have to replace a line / caliper.

So, how much prep work do you guys do? Sandblasting would obviously be optimal, but short of that, how clean is clean enough? I've blasted my axle with degreaser, hosed it off, and cleaned it somewhat with a wire wheel on a drill. But there are lots of nooks and crannies that I can't really get at. Would you guys paint at this point, or keep at it until it's 100% grease- and rust-free?
 
Used homedepot 99 cent primer and gloss black works great so far. But brake fluid will eat most spray paints for lunch.

Had my axle pressure washed at a huge truck wash it stripped all the old paint off so I'm guessing it was pretty high pressure and only cost 20 bucks. Can't beat that with a stick.
 
I just use a name brand satin black rattle can. Works fine. But then again I don't live in a snowy area that will see salt. Hell, I was in a rush to get my front axle under my jeep and I didnt paint it for over a year. The oil leak was bad enough to prevent rust on the truss and steering.

That seems like a good way to go, but not feasible for me.

I'm kind of thinking that a fresh coat of paint over an imperfectly prepped base is probably better than no fresh paint at all. Gonna go with the Rustoleum Hammered, applied with a brush.

Ditto $10.00 worth of rattle cans and you can take one on the trail and touch it up after each run unless it's a street queen then bag it and chrome it! But if ju spray homes chu got tu chake the can real hard to get all de colour to stick! Ju can get 2 for one at the home boy shopping network this week!
 
If you really want paint to stick then sand blast it then use a self etching primer. its like welding the paint to the metal at that point. haha
As for brake fluid or brake clean if the paints still new then it will take it off but give it a few weeks and it should hold up much better.

Axle i did 15 yrs ago with Rustoleum in that way is still black.
 
Second on "whatever's cheap and plentiful and comes in the color you dig".
I can't imagine any paint holding up to even a few light wheeling trips. I just spray bomb it flat black as it looks good no matter how little prep work I do, and re-apply whenever my Jeep's looking for a date.
Hell, I rarely even bother washing the axle first. I just wait for a rainy day when my axle happens to clean itself up pretty good, let it dry, throw on another coat.
 
I take the "makeup shotgun" approach to axle paint. If I don't get good coverage or adhesion the first time, that's okay because next time the axle will be clean in other area's. Eventually you'll have paint everywhere, built up with enough layers to add a few lbs to your axle.
 
if you want the paint to stand up to rocks and gravel look into DuPont Imron 5000. Its tuff as hell and easy to shoot. No it does not come in a rattle can but it will out live your XJ.
