My personal opinion is the Cummins engine. It is BY FAR the best engine offered in a pickup. Get pretty good gas milage, the best for logevity and power. The only thing is that the Dodge pickups are not the most desirable ride for a DD. Second choice would have to be the Ford. Better comfort, but not top in motor choices. Especially the NEW powerstroke! Make sure you buy a slightly older model if possible.
Either 4-Wheeler or 4WOR did a comparison on the big three. They were very close unloaded, but the Ford blew the others away on the towing test. You may be able to check it out online. I have the 7.3 Powerstoke in my work van with 166k miles, and it runs and tows great. If Ford could figure out how to get an intercooler in the van, I'd have a 6.0 PS ordered now.
id say ford or dodge and your safe. it all really comes down to what you can find close and cheap. try ebay. my old man just snagged up a 99 f350 extend. cab psd w/ the 6spd and all sorts of goodies, only 100k on the ticker for way under $20k. texas seems to be the state to buy from new as well, might be time to take a roadtrip
The cummins is the only way to go. They get the best mileage out of the three and they make power at a lower rpm then the rest because they are an I-6 motor not a V-8. The cummins in my truck usually gets about 23-26 MPG when driving every day. I will get about 15-17 when towing the Jeep.
I do have a Ford. F150 01 year and 2wd. And she will move on down the highway too! I have the 5.4L V-8 and have 20K on it since Feburary. Towed the jeep a couple of times and it pulled it very well. I want the new 5.4L in the F150 now. It has more power and torque than mine! I have own/Driven 4 Ford trucks in my life and to me they are the best trucks.
Anybody who knows anything about diesels will tell you that a straight 6 is the best configuration out there. Cummins is the shnizit in the motor department. Having said that my wife is driving around in an 02 Excursion with the 7.3 PS. I believe Fords got the best overall package going.
Dad has a 98 (may be a 99) 1 ton dually gas 5speed to tow a 24' droptail 5th wheel. Aside from a single warranty claim (intake manifold gasket failed, dumping oil from the galleries through the intake) it's been a GOOD truck.
