What does a HP30 core go for?

At the local yard there is a HP30, no outers or shafts, 3.55 gears, all 4 ball joints blown out.
I offered $75, guy said "boss told me to get 300, lowest I could go would be $150". I told him I'd take a pass this time.
For a HP30 with no knuckles, brakes, shafts, fancy parts or usable ball joints... 150 sounded too high.
What should a HP30 go for in that condition?

same 100 to 150 for a complete. my opinion is what they have is worth its weight in scrap metal

Thanks for the input.
It's been at the yard, pulled, for months. I might offer again if I can't find a complete for 150 or under. I'd rather build an axle on the bench than disable my car for a day or a weekend, but $150 for Cs inward is nuts.

Hell with that, what they have isn't worth more than 50.

Don't some of the yards in CA do half price days? You can probably get a complete 30 for 50-75 bucks.

I got $9 for a complete Dana 35 at sims scrap yard.
I have paid $82 for a complete 30 on half price day at PickNPull, wish I pulled the breaks off and saved some money.

Really? The Rocklin pickNpull lists a complete front axle for $250, +$30 "core charge". I'd be at $140 on half price day. Guess if I stripped brakes & hubs I could get it down to 185 / 92.50. Don't know where else to go, maybe somewhere in Reno is a bit more reasonable.

Picknpull in Sacto Charges 294$ for a complete front end.

If you buy a core make sure it has bearing caps or you are SOL

just wait for a naxja or CL freebie. I used to not be able to even give away stock 30 housings at one point. just sent them to the JY. I am sure they will start popping up as builds start up after people start getting their tax returns.

$19 according to my numbers (including brake drums), last time I hauled in a load of #1 steel scrap it was 11 cents a pound.

Keep your dana 35s! They are only going up in value! :laugh2:

yossarian19... I too am waiting to get a HP D30 and change out my LP. I think we will be able to find one as tax refunds start coming in and people start up grading their axels. I hope to get a full stock axel for $200 or so depending on any up grades done to it.

Nice to see a fellow NC member that understands it is not just a quick trip to the local PNP from the San Juan Ridge.

I work at a salvage yard, (where I am at this very second), and for us, there is really no way to know what kind of condition the axles are in when we get vehicles in. We usually don't sell them as cores. We can take the time to jack it up and manually turn them by hand, but thats about it. So, we assume they are in sound functionality. We let them go for about 275 apiece. Plus shipping of course. oh, and a warranty. And I can tell you exactly what salvage yards across the U.S. have the axle you need. all the way down to the gear ratio and abs.. just gimme the year, w/ or w/o abs and ratio.

Hah! I thought I was the only one in this neck of the woods. You up on the Ridge? I'm on Banner Mountain, classing up the neighborhood substantially with my scrap metal pile.
Yeah, I'm hearing that around tax return time things will start showing up for sale. I don't know if I can wait that long for a builder, might have to just fix my current junk.
You been to the Grass Valley 4wd club meetings? Think I'm gonna go to this one coming up

Using car-part.com? Yeah that's a crapshoot at best, most yards are staffed by retards. I was looking for a YJ d30 with 3.55s for a project on a friends jeep. Called up a yard that had one listed, they insisted they looked it up by the VIN and it was 3.55s, so I drove an hour and a half to get it. Show up, find only vehicles with 3.07 and 4.10 tags... they swear up and down they checked it via VIN and counted revolutions and it's definitely 3.55! I tell them to pop the damn cover and count the teeth and tell me for sure. They do so, it's 3.07s, so they tell me to have a nice life.

Wasted 3 hours of driving and half an hour of dealing with morons for an axle that was listed completely wrong. Looking at car-part.com right now, it's STILL listed, they never even took it down.

So I don't really trust salvage yards at all unless I verify the info myself now.

I ran with some of the GV 4wd Club at Winter Fest last year and they seemed like a good group of guys but I never went to the Pizza place for a meeting. We keep talking about it though and Tue., the 4th is open so I think we'll go. See you there maybe.

I am hoping to get a HP D30 a little built, gears at least, so I can just drop it in and save a little money.
