I have a 98 XJ i'm already converted to 5 on 5.5 and have a 44 front
I have a chance to get a Detroit locked 9.25 with 4.56's
Whats your opinion on this axel, opinions on a better swap such as a dana 44, Ford 8.8, i have a 29 spline 8.25 today
Thanks up front

Its an 8.25, but bigger. If you get it for real cheap go for it, but I say 9".

Where talking $750

Go waggy, or 14 bolt or heck go unimog

I'll be posting soon on what next to do to my xj because I have no sense of direction whatsoever and decided I should build my xj to what people think is cool, not based on what I use it for or the abuse it gets :anon:

Can I have your Dutchmans after you do the swap?

What planet would that be on?

What he is saying is that they are both very similar in design.

I would shy away from the 9.25 for a few reasons:

1. Ground clearance.
2. Availability/cost of aftermarket parts - not nearly as popular as other models = more expensive. Fewer gear choices, if I remember correctly.
3. If you were to damage something in the axle on the trail, what are the odds that somebody would have spare parts?

what is the 9 1/4 off of? if you're getting it off of a dakota, remember they have a 6-lug pattern.

I have a 9.25 under my Ram 1500. I had to rebuild it, but it's a strong axle. I believe it has a 5 x 5.5 bolt pattern. you can have up to 4.56:1 gearing and that's all on one carrier.

yeah i know the rams have 5 lugs. for some crazy reason the dc engineers decided to put the dakota 9 1/4 with 6 lugs while fitting the ram w/ the 5 lug. i never could figure out why they would put a 6 lug on the dakota.

i just wanted to make sure he didn't over look the lug pattern if he was getting a dakota axle. that's all.

The Lug Pattern is 5 on 5.5, The 8.25 Dutchmans have failed, 1 twisted and the other sheared off the studs, I called Dutchman and they will not warrantee either. and want $240 for the set plus shipping, and leadtime to make. They said no one would warrantee shafts?? and there only 20% stronger than stock 8.25's. I always thought Dutchman, and others, like Warn, Moser, etc warrantee'd there shafts. Anyone no for sure. Anyways Found this 9.25 and don't know dick about it, except that it has 4.56's Detroit, New Brakes, and has 2000 miles on it.
From what i red so far i believe it's 64" wms and stock XJ is aprox 61"
kind of like the extra width. As for Clearence does any one know what i would be losing.
Thanks

No one warranties shafts for abuse. Dutchman warrantied SenP's shafts for a material failure after he sent them back. They are a very good company to do business with, but as is the case with other axle companies, they know what is being done to there product, and they are not going to lose there shirts on warrantying products that are being abused.

One was unsuspected abuse the other was wear and tear, they wouldn't warrentee either? I wasn't looking for handouts just what to expect for the future. This topic isn't about Dutchmans axels or it's company, it's about opinion about the 9.25

Yes, I understand that. Did you send them the axles for inspection? Perhaps it was a material problem?

I will now give you my opinion on Cryco Corporate axles:

They are very poorly designed and have horrid quality control issues. The only thing good about them is the use of the threaded collar that adjusts backlash and carrier pre-load. They are noisy, tend to eat gears, and are short of aftermarket support.

I have a feeling the reason they eat gears and are loud is because the pinion shaft is not squared properly to the carrier bore. This prohibits you from obtaining an optimal gear mesh pattern, and results in hot running gears.

I have never seen an axle that takes a wider variation of pinion shims to get the depth correct. Even Dana's are more predictable. It takes anywhere from .010 to .085 to get a good pattern in a Chryco axle. That, to me is an indication of poor quality control of the machining prosess.

Thanks for the Opinion, you sound very knowlegable about setting gears up.
In my case with the 44 front, with 5 on 5.5 what would you build for the rear?

Dana 44
Dana 60
Stay with the 8.25 and try new shafts
Ford 8.8
Any other options
Thanks again for the comments

I would go 9 inch just for the same bolt pattern it will have the extra width you want also, the pinion is a little low but its a great axle. If you got an 8.8 you would have to change shafts but would get discs. A RC semi float 35 spline 60 would be great but is more spendy.

Overall I would do a 9. I didn't see what size of tires you are running if over 35s I would think more about that 60 or 35 spline 9 inch.

BTW I agree chryco axles stink. My bro in law needs a 3.55 geared one for his ram though if anyone has any leads.

I agree with Lazy G, for cheap simple fun, a 9 inch can't be beat. Find one from a 70's F-100 pickup with 31 spline axles and big bearings, and you're halfway to a fabulous axle for less than $100 (we get them out here for $75 at Pick and Pull). The F-100 units are usually about 64" wide, depending on year, and they are 5 on 5.5".
