What did you do to your XJ today

..drilled too big of a hole for my nutzert..

IMG_2442.jpg

the frame rail joins and thus overlaps in this mounting location for my skid plate.
i was using a step bit to drill holes for the nutzerts to mount the skid.
the steps weren't deep enough for the double layer of metal..

..to get through both layers of metal with the proper diameter, i had to drill into the outer layer a bit with the next larger diameter step, and now i can't get my nutzert to grip.

so, i'll try to track down a 5/8" OD nutzert with accompanying hardware.
i was being pretty careful - i dealt with this okay on the other side!!
not careful enough, i guess!

Got it stuck. First time that's happened in this one. I'm so used to wheelin' in 2wd that I almost crapped myself when I reached down to move it to 4wd to get out and realized I was in 4low and stuck........ :banghead:

Most embarrasing part about it was getting pulled out by a 22r-e 4runner with 31's. Fml.

Anyone else ever been to the trails in Ravensdale? They're East of Covington and man were they not made for small Jeep's w/ 7" lift and 35's... Maybe bronco's on 39.5's haha

That's the best way to learn the capabilities of your rig. Don't sweat it, you'll be alright.

Yea I just feel stupid haha. I need to work on my x-ray vision more. If i had know that puddle would drop down about 31-32 inches and eat my axle, I wouldn't have gone in lol.

FYI, there's no legal wheeling in Ravensdale. Landowners are prone to shoot at you, then call the cops. :D

Although I had an idea of whether it was legal or not the entire time we were out there we didn't see any no trespassing signs. The cool area we found was on the power company's land too. We did cross in front of a classy single-wide with a million wind chimes only to be glared at by the hillbilly-esque residents. Shortly after it sounded like we were being hunted by their dogs so we got out of that area haha.

What is the world coming to when you have to put up "No tresspassing signs" to tell people to stay out (let me guess you expect them to replace them all every other day when they are stollen also). If it isn't your property, shouldn't it be your responsibility to make sure you have permission to be there? :shhh:

You really need to watch what you post.

There are some "powerline" trails which are part of legal ORV areas, but 99.9% of the rest of the time those trails are illegal. Power companies have little to no tolerance toward the 4x4 community because of this (people tearing up their land).

This same exact scenario is happening right now for the Yacolt Burn in SW Washington. People have spent the last decade tearing up BPA's land, and now they want nothing to do with helping out the new legal trail system being developed.

If you want to wheel, take it to an ORV area.

not only watch what you post, but watch what you DO!

...now back on topic - how the @#()%&*@# should i fix my too big of hole for my nutzert?!?!

it is hard to find these things local, i think i have to order online?

gah, what a pain!

First off, don't use a step drill. Use the appropriate size drill so it doesn't happen again ;)

What about the next size up nutzert?
Bolt it all the way through with a sleeve in the frame?
You could use a threaded insert (I can't think of the correct name at the moment but they are threaded inside and out to use a smaller bolt in a larger hole)?

yeah, man, i even anticipated this exact problem, and was super careful.
i did fine on the other side where the metal overlapped like this.

this was my LAST hole, and i messed it up.
5 out of 6 is not too bad, considering i installed these nutzerts by hand!
(JCR recommends an impact)

i was thinking about using something to wedge the nutzert in place to get it to grip.
a small few strips of metal and some jb weld?

im not concerned about this bolt's 'reliability' i just want something in this hole.

i could probably bolt the skid up with the 5 out of 6 side bolts.
it uses 3 additional front mounted bolts, and the 2 additional xmember mounted bolts.

thats 11 bolts in total - but i would only have 10...

its just annoying!
what do you think of jb weld/wedging it in place to get it to grip>?

Why not drill a new hole in the skid plate and relocate the nutsert with the proper size hole?

I have used JB weld for several applications and it has worked incredibly in all of them, and this very well could work well for you depending on how big the space is between the nutsert and the frame rail you are filling. I don't trust JB weld on anything structural and you need to let it fully cure before you "use" it.

What exactly is this for? where are the forces?

Nothing wrong with moving the wholes also.

Michael

washed it, lots of mud at Palo Duro last weekend.

yea, lost as a goose, sorry
