What did I do to my XJ today? (Post your XJ TECH happenings)

Re: What did I do to my XJ today? (Post your XJ happenings)

today I received the downstream sensor (on the cat)...now I'm wonder if this will help to a better idle tune for the engine(97,4,0L)

Over the weekend: New spark plugs, flushed front and rear differential and transfer case. I know, not fun lifting/adding lights/etc, but it made a huge difference. The old 88 perked up and smoothed out quite a bit... Transmission flush and more fender trimming (stock height +31's) soon to come.

Re: What did I do to my XJ today? (Post your XJ happenings)

Last weekend: welded tailpipe to muffler, welded a new hanger onto the pipe just before the catalytic converter, replaced both front swaybar linkages as one had snapped.

Next weekend: rear main seal, oil pan gasket, fluid in both differentials, pinion seal on front differential (d30). Not really looking forward to the pinion seal...

Replaced my carpets 2 weeks ago. Not excact colour match, but OK anyway.
ADVICE !! Do not even think about going for the cheap quality. Money out of the window.

This is how the old one looked like

So, my son bought a new car (used) and doesn't want his old XJ ('88 titled in my name anyway) since it was slowly dying! I started taking parts from my new "doner" jeep to use on my '89. So far, have a gas tank skid (factory), fuel pump (mine was making a racket sometimes), Rusty's cold air intake with K&N filter, lift gate cylinders (mine were weak). As soon as the PB Blaster does it's thing, I'll have new/spare front axle shafts. Also now have a spare front drive shaft.

Now, I just stare at it...thinking what to take next!

With the snow storm that is supposed to hammer the Maryland area, I thought today would be a good day to teach myself how to rebuild a np231 so I have working 4 wheel drive to be ready for the upcoming storm.

Re: What did I do to my XJ today? (Post your XJ happenings)

Aired up my leaky left front tire, thought about throwing some cardboard under the back and remounting my trailer hitch, decided it was raining too much and assumed the couch potato position.

Re: What did I do to my XJ today? (Post your XJ happenings)

Put the 33s on finally, aired them up, redid my alignment a little, trimmed the fenders a bit and bought more parts for my trans cooler. Tomorrow I'll install it.

Re: What did I do to my XJ today? (Post your XJ happenings)

Sunday afternoon I replaced the pinion oil seal in my Dana 30 and installed a new yoke and nut. With a pipe wrench in one hand holding the yoke and the torque wrench in the other nearing 150 ft lbs ( I had already gotten it to 140 ft lbs.) the torque wrench popped of the pinion nut and I got the mother of all knuckle busters as I punched the garage floor. It's Tuesday and I haven't stopped cursing!!!
I feel you dude! My knuckles just stay sore.

Re: What did I do to my XJ today? (Post your XJ happenings)

tore the sagging headliner out of my MJ so I can drive it to work without being driven mad by having it hanging on my head. Did a little more rebuild work on the transmission going into the XJ "real soon now."

I'm probably going to pick up a pair of wheel studs on my way home tonight, since I have to do brake lines and cylinders on the rear end and I am SURE that I will break at least one of the studs on the rear right wheel, I was putting about as much force as I felt comfortable with on it with a two foot breaker bar and it didn't budge, and another stud is already broken off that hub. Gotta love 800 dollar rustbuckets!

Rear shocks are going in too, I'd do front shocks as well but the shock brackets on the beam are so rusty I'm afraid they will break off if I put functional shocks on them... I'll get around to fixing that mess when I put a d30 in it.

Re: What did I do to my XJ today? (Post your XJ happenings)

There's a thread in the SEC about the best stuff to use for helping to loosen stuck/rusty bolts.

It's acetone and ATF.

I've got a quart of that mixed up in my back hall, but I can't really find a good way to get it under the lug nuts without turning the truck on its side... and they're just wheel studs and lugnuts, someone else already broke another one off on the same wheel so I'm going to buy two and see what happens. Gotta open the diff to replace the VERY rusty cover and do a lube change anyways, and it'll make it easier to get to the wheel cylinders for replacement.

Re: What did I do to my XJ today? (Post your XJ happenings)

Buy a cheapo squirt bottle. The acetone will "melt" it but if you just use it real quick then dump out the excess you might could reuse it.
