What are you doing to your rig - the continuing saga

Had some time to work on my tire carrier today. After reading a bunch of different stories on the web, and heeding the advice from several of you guys, I added a set of inside-the-frame-rail support brackets. Kind of a bitch lining up the existing holes in the frame to the brackets, but I think it'll be worth the extra work.

Then I built my spindle support and shortened the Ruffstuff spindle about 1.5" on a lathe. The support is a triple style that has uses 3 lateral 1/4" pieces (I forgot to take a picture of the middle one) then it was boxed-in with more 1/4" flat bar. After reading a bunch of horror stories of these things snapping and flying off on the road, I over-engineered the crap out of it without making it brittle.

Next weekend I'll be building the actual tire carrier arm.

That looks awesome man. Can't wait to see it all finished up.

Actually pretty comparable to the price of frame stiffeners and nice rock sliders, and these are both in one package. When you see how these are built in person and how much work hooligan puts into these you will see they are worth the price imo

I can attest to Josh's quality work nothing is built at the minimum from his shop...LOL...can you immagine how much it would cost to get that same set up at another fabrication shop in the Commerce City area... Hint>>>>( U.S. MINT) ...LOL

If those inside frame rail brackets go how I think they do, you should weld some of the vertical web back on along their length... at least on the passenger side where you don't have a fuel fill neck hose to sneak by.

With them cut down that much you are barely adding any structure to the thing. I hate to be a killjoy and Monday morning quarterback, but I would rather that than not say anything till it fails.

Beef is good...... but that spindle box is hideous........ just sayin'........

Cut that box diagonal and make it a triangle "shelf" if you will. Kinda like a military antenna mount. That lower edge of the box is gonna catch and dig on rock shelfs/ledges. Cut it at an angle so it'll slide.

Like so.........

Trying to track down a damn rim on the cheap, and considering the 4 port injector upgrade. Saving up for relocater box & new shackles to help the ride out. Then driving it into oblivian.

Recently put new headlights & wiring harness, and bedlined the grill & lamp shrouds.

I actually was going to do that, but without a capable drill press, there's no way to get a properly ovaled hole for the spindle to slip through at that angle.

The box itself is made up of triangled pieces. I took those pictures sitting down so you cant really see it. It's not as big and bulbous as it appears. The front plate is the only piece that's an actual square.

........ That's what that fancy plasma cutter you bought is for......

:shhh:

Memories... Like the corners of my mind... Misty water colored meeeeeemooories.

Damn. Dad called me last night. That damn Peugeot trans just let go in sisters jeep. Guess she's out of a ride til I can get back and get after it. Never ends.

Is it actually the tranny, or the clutch? Those internal slave cylinders tend to go out and leak all over the clutch.

I dunno. I am in New Mexico til end of January and getting them to describe it is painful. Lol.
Sounds like slave though. Imma try and get them to pull trans and see what's up. Hopefully they can get it rolling til I get back and I can sort out a better trans for that thing.

It's worth it to source an AX-15 with an external slave, if the plan is to keep a manual. I'm just starting to have some noises from the clutch after having one swapped in 11 years ago. If you do, the stock master/slave from the dealer already fed and bled, it's worth it. If you go auto, maybe Jim and Flores will have that swap down. We do have the schematics for it.

Mike -- is your sister in a bad way without wheels? If you can source a tranny I'm sure some of us could get together and get it in while you're gone...

I want to put in aw4. She wants to keep a stick. It'll be up to my folks and her to decide. I'll just have to buy all the shit.
I've already talked to Flores and him about their swap. So who knows.

They still have my brothers truck. Gonna wait for swap until later day. Just gonna get her trans fixed for time being. They should be able to figure it out. Brother pulled tcase a a few times with me and helped me pull motor. So we will see. Thanks for offer though.
